47. CARDS OF THANKS
rmed out
at Clinton Publicle, tHo Hospital
May 15 for the unveiling of a
plaque dedicated to the late
Dr. William Mustard of the
Brucefield area, a famous
surgeon who was also recent-
ly inducted into the Canadian
Medical Hall of Farne.
"He provided life to so
many infants and to other
people who otherwise
wouldn't have fared so well,
it makes me swell with pride
that Dr. Mustard was born in
this arca," said Dr. Peter
Salsbury, during the ceremo-
ny.
Dr. Mustard devised an
operation for "blue babies"
that continues to save th
lives of children across th
world. Among other notabl
achievements, he is als
famous for a surgical muscl
transfer that gave polio suf
ferers a second chance.
Dr. Mustard was born in
1914 and died exactly a
decade ago. He graduated in
medicine from the University
of Toronto in 1937 to then
become the youngest doctor
in Canada.
He began his career in the
Canadian Army Medical
Corps before further surgical
training in New York. He
returned to Toronto and prac-
tised at the Hospital for Sick
Children for 29 years.
