IW Bereavement group to help with rj DY DAVID SCOW Expositor Editor There is no shortcut from the grieving process. Realizing that for those who have lost a loved ono, there is a lot or pain and hard work involved with grieving, the Huron Hospice volunteer service is sponsoring a bereavement support group. "This is a peer support group. It's different than ther- apy or counselling," said co - facilitator Shirley Dinsmore. The bi-monthly meetings are scheduled to start June 4 and 18 and will be held on the first and third Wednesday of every month at Maplewood Manor on Church Street in Seaforth. There is no cost for the meet- ings and Maplewood is donating the space for the group. There is a real need for this type of group in the area, says Dinsmore. "We've had numerous referrals from agencies, physicians. We know the need is there because the hos- pice is growing in leaps and bounds." It's not like the need didn't exist in the past, there just hasn't been the manpower, she says. But with Huron Hospice getting its own office space at Seaforth • Community Hospital a few years ago and building a strong network of trained volunteers, it's able to offer more now. Had to go out of town In the past, people seeking support after the death of a loved one, had to drive an hour to the nearest support groups in the city. "We were hearing of people going out of town, going to these groups. We wanted to to make something more accessible," said Dinsmore. One of those people who drove to London many times in the past to attend a support group was co -facilitator Joan "There's a lot of people around at the funeral and the first week or two after. Then people are left on there own." Stewart. Often she'd drive down with people from Seaforth and Goderich and felt there was a need to start a group here. Dinsmore has a background in social service and Stewart has taken the hospice training course and has personal experiences to share about grieving. "We take responsi- bility for organizing and facilitating the group. But the agenda and needs of the group will be set by the group," said Dinsmore. Right now the facilitators have planned two meetings a month, depending on the interest of the group, that could also be subject to change. Take Away Myths "The goal (of the bereave- ment support group) is to normalize grief, to take some of the myths away - like after three days off, it's time to go back to work," said Dinsmore. "Or after a month it's time to get on with your life," said Stewart. Dinsmore said they want to let people know that every- one grieves in different ways. And that people are not "going crazy" when they're grieving - one of the common feelings of someone dealing with the death of a loved one. "We want to let people know there is a light at the end of the tunnel, there's a healthy way to grieve and that it'll be okay in the end." New trees planted The Public Works Department has planted 20 Austrian Pine trees and 25 Maples around Seaforth so far this spring. Four trees in the planters in front of Town Hall were replaced with Globe Maples. In addition, there were 17 Spruce and seven Maple trees replaced at the Seaforth lagoons. Queen will visit The Queen will visit Stratford with Prince Phillip for the official opening of the newly renovated Festival Theatre on June 28, as well as London where there will be an official welcoming cer- emony in Victoria Park on June 26, among other stops, according to the royal itiner- ary released last week. It is the first visit by the Queen to Ontario since 1984. May 21 Expositor Exposed! The Ex -Files: Spotted Mistakes: 1) Page 1 - "knew" instead of "new" - M. "I felt that I'd like to work through the grief," she said. Have to Realise Proem • here's mass who desire to run away from it. But tisane's no short -out from the grieving process. Other peo- ple have to realize what the grieving person has to go through," said Dinsmore. She gave as an example, a wife who won't give up her husband's sweater. And wears it around the house in memory of him. "That's okay. People have to know that's okay." Stewart had initially spoken to Dinsmore about forming a bereavement group years. "It has been Joan's goal Ace she joined the hospice." The course she attended in London was a grief workshop facilitated by a professional where participants worked through grief in stages. However, there was a cost to attend that program and Dinsmore says they want the local group to be accessible to everybody. "Maybe down the road there'll be a need for a workshop." Local clergy leaders have also agreed to lend their sup- port to the group. Confidentiality Both facilitators stressed that the meetings are strictly confidential. Referrals can also be made for professional support, if needed. "We have a psychologist and resource people available," said Dinsmore. The goal of the Huron Hospice is to eventually set up a bereavement support group in Clinton and Goderich. The meetings are open to those who have lost anyone - a friend, spouse, child, family member. Stewart says the group and facilitators can offer "emo- tional and spiritual support from someone who has gone hrough the grieving experi- ence or going t6 the once going th the same " Support Pleaded When family and friends are grieving, there's only so much support they can give allies otter, .Sys Dinsmore. And sometimes friends just don't want w hon the story. limy don't watt to deal with.' it, she says. Reaction like that just makes the grieving per- son want to bottle up but the bereavement group can give them a chance to open up. "They can go there and sharowithout the fear of bur- dening other people." "There's a lot of people around at the funeral and the first week or two after. Then people are left on their own. It's a lot to work through especially if they're left with a child," said Stewart. Years ago people used to hold wakes and funerals at their home because people died at home, she said. Today people want the funeral over with quickly. "It's not healthy because peo- ple are thinking about it (the death) if the funeral is quick or not," says Dinsmore. Grief is something every- one has to work through. "You can go around it or through it," says Stewart. "Grief is work. It's hard, hard work," says Dinsmore. While there are courses for parenting, marriage and childbirth, there are no cours- es on death and how to go through the pain of losing a loved one, says Stewart. "People don't want to talk about death because they don't want to face their own mortality," says Dinsmore. The bereavement support group first meets at Maplewood Manor on June 4 at 8 p.m. Please enter through the rear door off the parking lot. Anyone interested is wel- come to attend.
