Dear FARM:
This Setter is to express my
appreciation for the nice
write up you put in your
paper about my son. Last
November I came to you
ask if my son Dennis
be featured as a prospective
athlete who was not geuing
any recognition in the
London media.
It really hun a,y son when
his team, the Bunting
Broncos won their semi-final
game against Regina Mundi
but were not recognized for
their efforts. In fact the news-
caster said on the regional
sports station that the only
reason Banting won was
because one of Regina
Mundi's touchdowns was
called back. If the newscaster
himself had been at the game
he would have seen how
unsportsmanlike R.MC.
played. The number of penal-
ties they received cost them
the game as it docs any team.
But for the newspaper and
TV to say R.M.C. should
have won was hurtful.
Banting, played an excel-
lent game in which Dennis
played both offensive and
defensive line. He had the
cuts and bruises on his fore-
arms to prove the amount of
effort and determination he
put into this game. However
after hearing the sports on
TV. his ego was also bruised.
That was why 1 came to you
to ask if you could do a small
write up on Dennis. It was
the lift of confidence my son
needed.
Thank you Huron Expositor
for recognizing so many
young athletes over the years.
But what impressed me mast
was after I asked you what
was the cost to write the arti-
cle you said. "NO
CHARGE". Hest Regi

tell her he died.
Oldfield said Mistie also
learned there was Micmac
Indian in her family, answer-
ing a question Mistie was
often asked.
Mistie met Oldfield's com-
mon-law husband of 15
years. James Kidd, common-
ly known as Jazz.
Oldfield and Mistie called
each other often and gradual-
ly grew closer over the next
couple months.
Mistie spent Christmas. the
March break. Easter and
other weekends with Oldfield
and Kidd getting to know her
family better and learning
about her other relatives in
Nova Scotia.
"She was starting to treat
the apartment like her home,"
Oldfield said.
Oldfield had a trip planned
to Nova Scotia at the start of
-the summer and Oldfield tes-
tified to how accommodating
the Murrays were with Mistie
taking the trip and trying
school in Downsview in
September, 1995.
"She was tickled pink.
When she got the permission
[to take the trip] she was.
even happier. She told every-
one," Oldfield said.
Kidd was to pick Mistie up
in Goderich on June 2, 1995;
two days after she disap-
peared.
Kidd arrived in Goderich at
the specified time to discover
Mistie had not -shown up.
Day 2, May 1
Mistie's birth mother con-
tinues testimony and
Murray interviews with
police are watched.
Oldfield's testimony con-
tinued into the second day of
the trial with testimony about
her search for her daughter
and a cross-examination that
.revealed a "claimed sighting"...
in Toronto.
Oldfield never took the trip
to Nova Scotia. Instead, she
spent more than a week walk-
ing the streets in London
with photos of Mistie.
searching for her daughter.
Following that. she spent
every day after work and
every weekend until
September. looking for
Mistie in Toronto.
Under cross-examination
by Greenspan, Oldfield testi-
fied she was grateful to the
Murrays for the good home
they provided to her daughter
and of the positive relation-
ship they shared. Steve had
purchased a fishing rod for
Mistie to take on her trip to
Nova Scotia.
Oldfield also testified that
during her search, she came
across a "reported sighting"
of Mistie in an area of
Toronto where street kids
gather.
Someone had seen a girl
matching Mistie's descrip-
tion, including a gap in her
teeth that was using the name
Jean Marie.
This was Mistie's middle
name. given to her at birth by
Oldfield.
"Hearing the name 'Jean
Marie' from some stranger
gave you real encourage-
ment," Greenspan said. "i
suggest it was very chilling
10 you."
Oldfield said it made her
hopeful.
She agreed to Greenspan's
suggestions a similar situa-
tion occurred in London.
Constable Mark Johnston
of the Goderich Police
Service introduced videotape
evidence of a June interview
with Steve and Anne Murray.
regarding Mistic's disappear-
ance. Johnston then read a
transcript of a later interview
with Steve and video was
shown of a September inter-
view with Steve.
The couple talked about
their concerns that Mistie tra-
ditionally made friends with
people the Murrays had con-
cern with. This was the cause
of some friction between
Mistie and her parents but
they both said there was no
reason they could think of for
Mistie to have run away.
While they were having
some personal trouble with
Mistie, Anne said they decid-
ed to look for Mistic's moth-
er a couple years earlier than
they planned to see if it
would help her.
"Mistie really is a good
girl. She has a lot of good
qualities," Steve said.
.1n the interview, both indi-
cated there had been a posi-
tive change in Mistie's atti-
tude and that she was looking
forward to taking the June •
trip to Nova Scotia.
They also spoke of the
good relationship they alt
shared with Oldfield.
In a separate interview,
Steve said, "I only wanted
what was good for Mistie. I
only wanted to protect her
from the elements."
He said there was a lot of
love for Mistie. He indicated
he and Anne were concerned
about Mistie's gullible nature
and her willingness to trust
and go along with people
who might not be good for
her.
Together, they talked about
the exceptionally good mood

Mistie was in the morning of
May 31.
Initially, the last reported
sighting of Mistie was at 4
p.m. that afternoon, leaving
the Goderich District
Secondary School.
Mistie wasn't reported
missing until after she failed
to meet Kidd to leave for the
trip two days later.
In the first interview with
the police, Anne said Steve
asked her to go to London
that afternoon, after school to
pick up some T Shifts for the
Park House which the couple
owned. When she returned,
Anne assumed Mistie was at
band practice. She was a
member of the Seaforth Girls
Marching Band.
Through statements in the
three interviews, the jury
learned the couple went out
that evening and returned
around midnight. Mistie's
bedroom door was closed and
they assumed Mistie was
asleep inside.
Steve had to go to Toronto
the following morning and
took Anne out for breakfast
early in the morning, which
Anne said they never do.
Steve and Anne drove to
Vanastra for breakfast,
returning too late to pick
Mistie up and give her a ride
to school.
Anne was dropped off for
work at St. Mary's School
and Steve went to Toronto..
Thursday night. June 1. the
couple realized Mistie was
not home but assumed she
was out having fun with
friends since it was the night
before her trip. They decided
not to worry until the follow-
ing day. asstiming she would
return for the trip.
Steve had to leave again
that morning for Toronto to,
finish sorting out the compli-
cations for his licence.
Under cross-examination,
Johnston said the facts of
Murray's trip to Toronto Were
verified in the investigation.
in later interviews, just ,
with Steve Murray, he men-
tioned taking his boat out on
the lake on Wednesday night,
May 31.
He had planned to get the
boat cleaned at Rick's Car
Wash on Bayfield Road and
took the boat out for a shoe
trip before bringing it there
and leaving it overnight.to be
cleaned the next day. The
couple was planning a trip
with the boat that weekend.
"I wasn't out there [on the
lake] very long. I took it for a
little spin. I didn't go any-
where," Murray said in his
third interview with the
police.
Day 3, May 2
The last interview with
Murray is shown and wit-
nesses who saw Mistie testi-
In the third day of testimo-
ny, Johnston testified in a
cross examination that all of
Murray's travels on May 31
through June 2 were verified.
Testimony was then heard
From witnesses who had seen
Mistie at school and the Park
House on May 31.
First called was Joanne
Chiccini, a secretary at the
school. Mistie had come into
the office after 12:35 p.m.
complaining of hives.
Chiccini said she made a
baking soda paste and
applied it to the bumps on
Mistie's neck and shoulders.
She said Mistie was talka-
tive and excited about her trip
on Friday.
Addle Drennan, a secre-
tary at St. Mary's School
where Anne was working at
the time, testified she had a
call from Mistie after 2:30
p.m. in the afternoon asking
for her mother to call her at
the Park House.
Drennan overheard Anne
return the call around 3:30
p.m., finding out Mistie was
not there. In their police
interviews the day before,
Anne had indicated Steve
answered that call and told
her he had not seen Mistie.
Dean Murray, one of Anne
and Steve's two sons, testi-
fied he was working at the
Park House on the afternoon
ofMay31.
He spoke briefly with
Mistie, around 2:30 p.m.,
asking her why she wasn't in
school. He said she indicated
she had a lot to do before her
trip and band practice that
night. She said Steve asked
her to cleanher stuff out of
the boat which she and a
friend had left there the
weekend before.
Dean saw his father a few
times throughout the day and
again around 8:30 p.m. that
night, before Steve -and Anne
went to see friends in St.
Colurnban. They returned
around 12:45 a.m.
Under cross-examination,
Dean testified that he, his
brother, parents and friends
have all searched for Mistic
all over Ontario including
London, Toronto, Guelph and
Kitchener.
