CHILD FIND ONTARIO Will blitz Ontario and Canada during the month of May
for its Fifth Annual Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign. This campaign which also
incorporates `Missing Children's day' on May 25 recognizes the serious issue of
missing children and symbolizes our hope to bring them home and to keep them
safe
Last year 55,749 children were listed as `missing' by the RCMP. These numbers
include runaways, lost, missing and abducted children as well as those who have
simply `disappeared.' Approximately 20,000 (or 35%) of these children originated
from the Province of Ontario.
"The issue of missing children is a serious one. I think that most people would be
shocked to hear* that on any given day approximately 1200 children in Canada are
listed as `missing'," notes Jackie Cutmore, Executive Director of CHILD FIND
ONTARIO. •
The abduction of 15 -year-old Kristen French on April 16, 1992, shocked the entire
country. The Green Ribbon of Hope originated when students and teachers at Holy
Cross Secondary School in St. Catharines, Ontario, elected to wear a green ribbon
in the hope that Kristen would be returned. After Kristen's senseless and tragic
death, the students and faculty of her school dedicated the Green Ribbon of Hope
to CHILD FIND as a symbol of hope to highlight the plight of abducted and miss-
ing children everywhere.
CHILD FIND ONTARIO is a voluntary charitable organization founded in 1983
and officially incorporated in 1984 as a response to the serious problem of missing
children. It has established 20 chapters throughout the province with over 1200
volunteers working in their various communities.
CHILD FIND works with parents, law enforcement agencies, lawyers and gov-
ernment agencies to look for missing children. As well, CHILD FIND provides
support for parents of missing children, produces and distributes flyers and
posters of missing children and operates a 24-hour toll-free telephone line to col-
lect tips and receive reports on missing children.
At CHILD FIND we believe that the problem of missing children has to be
addressed through prevention which translates into education. We offer seminars
and workshops on child safety and have developed a highly successful `kidcheck'
fingerprinting program which now serves approximately 40,000 children a year.
This spring CHILD FIND initiated an "All About Me Baby I.D." program designed
to educate parents of new-born infants about infant and child safety. This program
consists of a booklet which contains the baby's footprint, photograph, vital statis-
tics and mother's thumbprints as well as information and tips on child safety.
All of CHILD FIND'S programs and services, including the "All About Me Baby
I.D." program, are offered free of charge and are endorsed by the Ontario
Association of Chiefs of Police.
"The fact is that there is a great deal that can be done and is being done to reduce
the tragedy of the incidence of missing children," says Jackie Cutmore. "Thanks to
the dedicated combined efforts of organizations like CHILD FIND and law
enforcement agencies, 52,664 of the children listed as `missing' by the RCMP in
1995 were eventually located. The Green Ribbon really is a symbol of HOPE!"
This May each individual can show their support by wearing a Green Ribbon,
making a donation, supporting a CHILD FIND -sponsored event, learning more
about child safety or volunteering their support.
