But recently you ran the picture and story of the Seaforth girls' !ingrate team who won the provincial championship on the back page of the front section to accommodate the advertising spots that you had sold to accompany this story and picture. 1 have worked as an editor and a reporter for several community newspapers in Huron and Bruce counties. I understand that advertising is necessary to publish a viable community newspaper but 1 draw the line at crassly exploiting our young .athletes to make money for The Er isitor and Bowes Publishing. 1 am disappointed that the nngette team's achievement did not make the front page of the newspaper except for aaeation in the billboard at the top of the page. And why didn't the story and picture run on the front page? Because you wanted to run the advertising spots with them and The Expositor wouldn't dream of running these ad spots with our ath- letes' achievements on the front page. So the story and picture of the ringette team's achievement get bumped tt' the back page of the section to accommodate the ad .spots. Those of us in the newspa- per business know that the back page of the front section is as well read as the front page. But that doesn't erase the disappointment when young athletes' achievements deserve front-page recogni- tion and they don't get their moment to shine -on the front Catholic leaders stopped speaking Latin 35 years ago CONTINUED from page 4 large. whether at the local Food Bank. the St. Vincent • de Paul Society, the Food Grains Project. or coaching a :.ports team. PAINTING & DRYWALL • quality wurknkit shih ' tree est+males • written guarantee Call Dave 527-2397 page because the newspa- per's management wants to make money by selling advertising spots to accompa- ny their story and pictures. The same week the Seaforth ringette team won the provincial title a Mitchell team came second. The Mitchell Advocate ran their pictures and story on the front page. They did not sell advertising spots to accompa- ny the story and pictures. 1t was news and it ran as • news on the front '.page. The Advocate is not in the habit of exploiting its hometown athletes as the Expositor does. They don't require that ads be sold to run a story and picture of Mitchell athletes' achievements. 1 wonder why it is that the Expositor's advertisers con- tinue to participate in this exploitation of the area's ath- letes. 1. for one. think their money would be better spent on a donation to the ringette teams. or the athletes involved World -calibre ath- letes such as Lloyd Eisler. Spending goes up Economists are optimistic about the 'most recent spend- ing figures released last week, which were far better than forecast and show con- sumers and businesses spent a seasonally -adjusted. 523 - billion in February,. up it lull three per cent from the month before. it was the biggest single - month sales gain'in almost six years. Isabelle Brnaaaur and:Boyd Devereaux do not achieve their wortdttitles without someone paying Out money to sgpport their training. When has the 'Expositor. Bowes Publishing or the Expositor's previous owner. Signal -Star Pttblithitltg, ever contributed to the training costs of any of these athletes? Yet they do not hesitate to line their pockets with adver- tising dollars solicited every • time these athletes win a title or championship. Shame un the Expositor. 1 think it is time that you run athlete's achievements as news and stop exploiting the athletes by insisting that these stories must be accom- panied by advertising spots to generate revenue for the Expositor.
