ONLY A SOLDIER
WOULD KNOW
See the darkness circle you.
See hatred all around.
See determined, fearful
faces
See bodies on the ground.
Hear shell fire in the dis-
tance.
Hear bombers in the sky.
Hear shrieks of pain and
hatred.
Hear distant loved ones cry.
Smell the stench of gunpow-
der.
Smell thick and angry
smoke.'
Smell your wife's sweet
handkerchief
Smell the war mankind has
provoked.
Touch blood soaked battle
grounds.
Touch your bayonet.
Touch the heavenly crucifix
On the chain around your
neck.
Sense the man behind you.
Sense his evil plot
Sense his raging expression
Sense his every thought.
Feel the weapon used
against you
Feel the thrashing hurt.
Feel your blood begin to
flow
Feel your body hit the dirt.
Know what this experience
is like
Know what it's like to die.
Know you've fought for
freedom.
Know the pain of your last
sigh.
Smell the sweet aroma of
poppies
See crosses row after row
Feel warm tears of sadness
Sense only what a soldier
would know.
