Stedmans VAS is a
department store that sur-
•vives in today's economy
by offering as wide a
range of products as larger
stores but on a smaller
scale. The recent installa-
tion of a complier system
provides automatic replen-
ishment and makes it

to expand toys, housewares
much easier for Stedmans
to keep their shelves well
stacked, and allow them to
sell alt the items typically
found in department
stores, as well as provid-
. lag a nice selection of
- movies at prices very com-
petitive to most video
rental places.
Accepting they can't
compete in fashion and
high profile toys allows
the Deightons to focus on
getting in the small inci-
dentals customers fre-
quently have difficulty
finding elsewhere. "We

nice if more of the larger
stores stayed open for
longer hours. A plus for
them in running a busi-
ness in a small community
is being able to personally
stand behind everything
they sell, ensuring that it a
customer.is not satisfied
they will do whatever is
required to correct the
problem.

enjoy. hearing their cus-
tomers are able to find
items in their store that
they couldn't get else-
where. ("1 love that one."
Dave says.) They also
appreciate the positive
comments about the
stores appearance. and
how the customers like
having featured items in
the centre aisle so they are
easy to find.
The Deighton's company
has recently developed a
motto which they feel is
especially fitting to then)
as a retailer in a small
