is a thriving family operation
From a modest begin-
ning out of a renovated
shed in 1936, McGavin
Farm Equipment has
grown into a thriving
equipment sales and ser-
vice supplier, as well as
dealing in lawn and garden
goods.
In 1936 J.J. and his son
Gordon saw the need for a
farm implement business
in the Walton area. So
they started one in a small
abed on Lot 22, Cjpn. 13
McKillop, relocating in
1950 to the corner of
Huronunty Roads 12
and 25.They moved to
their present location, a
renovated schoolhouse in
downtown Walton, in
1962. Gordon's son, Neil
McGavin, now owns and
operates the business with
sons Brian and Jeff.
McGavin's carries over
70 different manufactur-
er's lines of equipment,
providing both new and
Used products. These
include farm tractors, cul-
tivators, sprayers. packers,
no -till drills, lawnmowers,
rotary cutters, plows and
grain harvesting equip-
ment. Their business has
grown to such an extent
that they now have 19
employees, full and part-
time.
Neil and his sons grew
up on the farm and were
exposed to the implement
business from childhood.
As well. all three attended
the University of Guelph,
Neil and Brian graduating
with a two year diploma in
Agriculture and Business,
Jeff with a four year
degree in Agricultural
Business. This back-
ground in farming has led
to favorable responses
from their customers, such
as "Easy to talk with and
understand the farm busi-
ness," and "personable,
very knowledgeable."
Compliments like these
are one of the reasons the
McGavins enjoy having
their family business in the
Seaforth area. They
appreciate being able to
work on rich agricultural
land with innovative farm-
ers who are willing to try
new ideas. They make it a
point to call their cus-
tomers periodically to find
out how the equipment is
working and if there's any-
thing more they can do for
them.
Along this line.
McGavin Farm
Equipment has added a
new 10,000 square foot
service facility. They
hope this will enable them
to provide even better ser-
vice to their Huron County
customers. 1t is their
desire to get even more
aggressively into tractor
and big equipment sales,
supplying their clients
with innovative, efficient
equipment and implement-
ing a follow-up program to
service the products they
sell. In this manner they
hope to be able to survive
in today's economy.
"We like to treat our cus-
tomers the way we would
want to be treated our-
selves. With our new ser-
vice addition we're more
committed than ever to
providing our customers
with the best quality sales,
service and paras, now and
in the future."

Larger store enhances service
The Lookitbt Glass (for-
merly Future's Hair
Design) is a full service
salon which provides
everything from basic
shampoos to prescriptive
hair treatments. They take
pride in their friendly,
pleasant, down-to-earth _t
atmosphere.
Owner Shelly McMillan
established the salon in
March of 1987, originally
working out of her home
until her clientele grew to
such an extent that she
needed more space, which
is when she opened
'Future's Hair Design' at
the original location of 92
Main Street, Seaforth.
Shelly's 20 years of
experience continued to
serve her well and allowed
her to further expand so
that in December 1996
she was able to move to
her current location at 4
Main Street. At this time
she changed the name of
her business to 'The
Looking Glass' because it
better defined her personal
business motto 'Your
image reflects on us.'
This recent expansion
meant the hiring of more
stylists. Along with
Shelly, Trudec McClure.
Cindy Champagne.
EAR -CANDLING is offered at The Looking Glass.
Jennifer Hargreaves and
part-time employee
Bonnie Johnston work
constantly to help their
customers improve their
appearance and sense of
well-being. "Providing
our clients with personal
service is easy in a small
town because you can
keep in contact, run into
them in stores and at the
post office. You know
their lifestyles, interests,
family, and friends."
With a larger store The
Looking Glass is able to
enhance the services they
offer, adding reflexology,
ear -candling, facials and
spa pedicures. This is on
top of their established
hair and skin products
such as 'Creative' nail
products, 'The Graham
Webb Classic Line', 'Back
to Basics Line', as well as
'The Bodacious' fra-
grances and 'Utopia' tan-
ning products, both avail-
able exclusively in salons.
They hope to continue
introducing many new
alternative medicinal/ther-
apeutic treatments as they
become available.
"Our customers enjoy
the fact that we are in a
convenient location,
within walking distance
to many. People like
being able to come in and
be treated like an equal,
they really appreciate our
nice new salon."
Shelly and her staff wish
to extend their thanks to
those that have made the
business grow to where it
is today and to extend a
welcome to those who
have yet to make their
acquaintance.
"Come on in and check
us out."
