Seaforth and District
Community Centres' mis-
sion statement is "to pro-
vide quality recreational
facilities and services to
the surrounding communi-
ty. This will be done in a
safe and economical man-
ner. The staff and board
will strive to develop new
programs and services to
meet changing community
needs."
Seaforth's first recre-
ational service was the
Victoria Skating Rink
which opened in 1869,
succeeded by the
Dominion Ice Rink in
1878. In July of 1885 a
roller skating rink was
built by James and
William McMaster. The
Palace Rink on Huron
Street followed in January
1906 and in 1950 Seaforth
Memorial Arena was
erected on the agricultural
grounds on Duke Street,
which today is the parking
lot of the present Seaforth
and District Community
Centres, opened June 4,
1983.
Graham Nesbitt has been
the manager of the centres
for 12 years now, having
previously worked as the
assistant manager with
Glencoe Parks and
Recreation. Graham has
devoted several years to
obtaining formal schooling
related to his current job;
he graduated from a 3 year
Human Kinetics Program
with the University of
Guelph, and has a
Recreation Leadership
Diploma from Fanshawe
College. He was awarded
the Recreation
Practitioner's Certificate
for Facility Manager in
1990.
Graham works with the
staff at Seaforth's
Community Centre to pro-
vide this area with a com-
plete recreational facility,
surviving in today's econ-
omy by providing a range
of services from Bingo to
roller hockey.
A popular feature offered
at the local arena is the
"Dave McLlwain Hockey
School" which is 'a condi-
tioning camp designed to
prepare the player for
junior club training camps
as well as "AAA" and
local Bantam and Midget
tryouts'. It is an extensive
two-week camp, providing
2 1/2 hours ice time
instruction everyday, daily
video analysis, fitness and
activity sessions daily,
swimming, soccer, and

road hockey, as well as
seminars on nutrition,
drugs and alcohol, O.H.L.
and University Hockey
Programs. Full equipment
is provided for all ice ses-
sions, there is a Hockey
Assessment Report. At the
end all participants receive
a Certificate • of
Achievement. This runs
from August 17 to 29,
using 96 of the available
131 ice hours. The remain-
ing ice time is picked up
by local hockey teams. In
September the ice is used
by Ringette School, Power
Skating, Centenaires train-
ing camp, Minor Hockey
tryouts, and pick-up hock=
Bookings of special
events, tournaments, etc.,
are limited to two per
month so that regular users
schedules are not disrupt-
ed. Seven local schools
each receive 10 hours of
free ice time which thev
generally use during the
day just before liplidays.
Fitting the Christinas and
March breaks those is pub-
lic skating and programs
provided for children a
few days per week.
Future plans for the cen-
tres will hopefully include
ice time being provided
for speed skating, private
lessons for figure skating,
precision team skating,
"AAA" regional hockey,
girls hockey, ladies
ringette at earlier times,
additional ice time to
allow for more adult
teams, more time for free
public skating, and possi-
bly even a permanent
home for local curling.
There's even hope that an
additional ice pad can be
built which would allow
existing tournaments to
increase the number of
participants and also make
it possible to host new
tournaments or special
events, creating enough
traffic to make a pro shop
and/or a restaurant/sports
bar a viable possibility.
Seaforth and District
Community Centres hopes
to be fulfilling Seaforth
and areas recreational
needs for years to come. •
