Financial management
can fall to either party
Who will
manage the
finances is often
not discussed
before the •
marriage
When most women approach
the commitment of marriage,
they talk about where they
will live, whether they will
work, whether they will have
children and'how many.
Rarely do they consider
money — one of the most
significant factors in divorce
—tothedepththatit
requires. Who will manage
the money? How will it be
invested? For what goals?
Most women of previous
generations chose to yield or
abdicate responsibility for the
personal investing decisions.
and activity to their
husbands. Did they think that
men were born with an
,abundance of knowledge in
this field'? Men were forced
to listen and learn on their
feet. Pity" the woman who
assumed her husband was
good at that sort of thing and
found out too late that he
'wasn't! today, the men who
do have the knowledge and
interest to manage this aspect
of the relationship usually do
not have the time to do so
adequately in addition to the
demands of their jobs.
So, what is the answer?
Should women rush out and
demand hands-on control of
all the accounts? The answer
is one of balance, where both
parties discuss openly and
honestly their knowledge,
their fears, their goals and
ideas pertaining to money. As
a couple, she says, the
emphasis is on two people
joining together to share a
life. It would be a wise move
to consult with a financial
planner early in the
relationship to establish a
long-term financial plan with
which both are comfortable.
Neither one should make all
the decisions without the
input of the other. Even if the
husband does not believe his
wife knows anything about
money, he may be surprised.

Men often point to a woman's
wardrobe and say she can't
possibly manage money
because she never has any
left after shopping! They
forget that for years women
have had to plan their
expenditure on clothing,
makeup and skin care —
necessary items that are
exceedingly over -priced —
according to their limited
incomes. They have run
expanding households on
contracting incomes, fed and
clothed hordes, for
generations.
Today, despite the gender -
biased expenses and salary
gap, women often already
own property when they meet
their husbands, have their
own cars and have money in
the bank. In addition, women
traditionally started on jower
salaries, worked for shorter
periods, and therefore start
with a lot less to invest, a lot
later in life. it is important for
them to be able to make
informed decisions with
confidence.
What you need and what I
need are two different things.
An investment choice should
be based upon your current
income, family situation, age
and goals. More importantly,
it should be a decision you
are comfortable with for a
long time. Having that level
of comfort only comes with
knowledge and experience.
