gets her flu shots.
The anti-rejection drug is
provided free through
University Hospital but if
transplant patients had to pay
for the drug, it would cost
them about $7,200 a year.
University Hospital is one of
only a handful of hospitals in
Canada which performs
organ transplants. Even fewer
perform heart transplants.
"Ottawa does liver and kid-
ney transplants. And
Edmonton performs heart
transplants," said Michael.
Dr. N. McKenzie was the
doctor who performed the
transplant. Nancy thought it
was a strange coincidence
that at the time of her opera-
tion her maiden name was
MacKenzie and that a nurse
who helped with her recovery
was also named McKenzie.
Nancy still doesn't know
why her heart failed. "They
don't know. They did a biop-
sy of the old heart."
She regularly has to go into
University Hospital for a
biopsy of the new heart. A
catheter with a tiny camera
on the end in inserted
through an incision in her
neck and it is moved slowly
to her heart where they
remove a small tissue sample
for testing. Nancy is con-
scious throughout the proce-
dure and can watch it all on a
monitor.
A brief write-up about
Nancy and Michael and a
photo appeared the the 1995
John P. Robarts Research
Institute annual report. The
couple was invited to the
institute in London to hear
speeches on early transplants
and work that Robarts does.
Nancy's daughter Marissa,
11, spoke about her mom's
operation for her public
speaking this year and deliv-
ered her speech Monday
morning as a finalist at St.
James School.
