Experiencing life in third world BY GREGOR CAMPBELL Expositor Staff Seven local high school stu- dents are amongst a .group of 43 off to the Dominican Republic later this month, to experience life in the "third world." "To study spirituality and everyday fife, not so much the 'poverty'." says Don Sills, who is going for the fourth time, this time as a student leader of one of the contingents of senior students from St: Michael Secondary School in Stratford. "How some of these people seem to be so happy in the 'barrios' despite being..so- called 'poor ?" says Michelle OPP happy to meet over complaints . The local office Of the Ontario Provincial Police would be happy tomeet with Seaforth Council to discuss its concerns about snowmo- • biting activity in town. • "One of the problems con- tinues to be that people arc not phoning in the complaints to police." OPP correspon- dence to council. in response 10 concerns raised at a meet- ing last month note. "Currently we have three complaints on file - two from the same person." the OPP letter continues. "For the police to be effec- .tive; it is necessary for the complaints to come in at the time the offences are happen- ing. 11 the complaints go through the police, and not the councillors, we will know if we have numerous com- plaints .or one person com- plaining to numerous peo- plc." Drinking, driving charge BY CARLA-ANN OUD SSP News Staff A 36 -year-old Kippen man pleaded guilty to a drinking and driving charge in Goderieh Criirninal Court, Jan. 27 Court was told, Goderich OPP stopped a pick-up truck driven by Robert Forrester to check seat belts. The officer smelkd alcohol on Forrester's breath. Forrester failed a roadside screening test and was taken to the Seaforth OPP detach- ment. Forrester took two breathal- yser tests which registered 140 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of his blood. It is illegal to operate a vehicle with more ,than 80 mg of alcohol. Forroster,was sentenced to 21 days in jail which will be served pn an intermittent basis. Henderson. The group will be actually living with families in the Dominican sugar -cane fields. The Seaforth and arca stu- dents are going on the first trip, from Feb. 22 to March 1. The second contingent from St. Mike's then leaves, and comes home Match 8. • They arc also holding a dance for Grades 5 to 8 this Saturday in the St. Columban church basement from 8 to 11:30 p.m. to collect funds, or goods and supplies for the excursion. Items collected will be packed in a suitcase and. left in the Dominican for.distrib- ution. Interested' donors can .drop items off at St. James School in Seaforth, school- days between 9 and 3:30 p.m. The group would be grate- ful-for rate- fulfor any of the following: School items - notebooks, pencil crayons, pens, pencils etc.; baby items - ie. diapers receiving blankets, baby powder; sports equipment - balls, skipping ropes, etc; bed sheets and pillow cases; clean (or almost new) children's clothing; toiletries - ie. sham- poo, soap, toothpaste. The students -arc also sell- ing tickets for a draw to raise funds at Saturday's dance, with 'first prize a $300 gift certificate from the Benmiller Inn, and second prize a $50 gift certificate from Robindalc's. `Huron one of few boards who didn't have layoffs,' CONTINUED from page 1 The draft budget, which was released at Monday's board meeting, shows a total estimated budget of $59,651,269 for 1997, which is compared to the $60,803,211 estimated figures from 1996. The actual figures for 1996 won't be finalized until the end of March. Baird -Jackson said that by "lowering staff...we were able to achieve the savings." She noted that they were able to cut the administration by offering early retirement packages, adding "we are one of the few boards who didn't have any layoffs.' The superintendent of busi-. ness credited the limited cuts to fundraising efforts by the schools, and "because the trustees did so much work." "If 1 go back to 1996. we' have been really proactive to sec where the funding is going." she said. Baird -Jackson added that the "bulk Of the savings" that have been obtained will be seen throughout 1997. However, she said that it's 'to early to know what the budget will mean for taxpay- ers. She added the province has been raising the standard mill rate, anywhere from five to 10 per cent yearly. With that increase, she said, "Local tax payer gets hit, for another $1.2 -million."
