Essential hospitals move quickly

.administrative and support
service cuts, and savings in
direct patient care. It is essen-
tial that the hospitals move
quickly to create a single ays-
tem so that administrative
.aad support service savings
can be achieved in the short-
term and cuts to patient care
minimized.
The Health Services
Restructuring Commission
has indicated they will have
plans developed for all hospi-
tals within the province by
the fall of 1997. Movement
toward a single system will
demonstrate our Communi-
ties' commitment to cresting
a unique rural health care
system that meets the nods
of Huron Perth residents in
an effective and cost-efficient
manner. In order to retain all
eight hospitals, the Task
Force believes that we must
move forward quickly to cre-
ate a single sys'iem before the
Commission reviews the
Huron Perth situation. The
Task Force extends their
appreciation to the hospitals
for their commitment to work
together to create a Huron
Perth hospital system.

Thank you for Alzheimer awareness
Dear Editor:
Thank you for helping to
raise awareness about the
Alzheimer Society of Huron
County and Alzheimer dis-
ease, by providing newspaper
coverage of the fundraising
event Walk For Memories
held on Jan. 25,-1997.
This was a most successful
event and we are deeply
grateful to all who joined in
the walk-a-thon and those
who so generously donated
by sponsoring a walker. We
raised over $8000 for the
county. We are a growing
organization in the communi-
ty and we believe in putting
our fundraising dollars back
into the community.
During the past year the
Alzheimer -Society of Huron
County has been busy. We
have established .caregiver
support groups in Goderich,
Wingham, Exeter and
Seaforth. We have developed
•a Special Steps One -on -One
Program that provides respite
for the caregiver and an
enjoyable activity for t -he
individual with Alzheimer
disease. We also have two
separate community funding
programs for families strug-
gling with the cost inclined
by Alzheimer disease.
Our Society has put togeth-
er an extensive resource
library of videos and printed
material which is available
on a loan basis to groups and
individuals. We have held
public information meetings
and an all day workshop for
families and professional
caregivers. We also donated
funds to the Clinton Adult
Day Centra to start a third
respite day for the Alzheimer
Day Away Program.
We have been able to sup-
port financially the work of
medical research directed
medical research directed
towards the care and treat-
ment of this disease. As you
have read in the newspaper,
new drugs are providing hope
for sufferers of the disease. It
is for this reason that we have
increased our contribution to
Alzheimer research by 100
per cent.
We could not have engaged
in these important activities
without the generosity of
many folk like those of you
who supported us.
Thank you, Fran Hook

Have a plan for farm

I can't believe how quickly
families break down,"
warned Daly. •
He told a true story where
all three children thought the
family piano was going to
them and they argued about it
at a family visitation before
the funeral ha4 even taken
place. The executor of the
estate finally said, "It's not.
going to anybody. You can go
to the public auction and bid
on it."
Have a Plan
Daly told of his uncle who
died 10 days after being diag-
nosed with cancer. However,
he never told his wife about
the cancer and subsequently
no planning was done before
his death.
"It took six iuwnths before
she (his aunt) knew anything
about the farm. Do you want
to do -this?" asked Daly.
He says it's fairly common
in family fanning to say to a
child "stay here, we'll farm."
But, he warns, you're binding
yourself. And you're really
never letting your child go.
He warned that if a child, at a
young age, says "I want to be
a farmer just like dad" that
parents shouldn't hold the
son to that .when he becomes
older and his plans change
and he discovers there's other
things in life like girls, said
DHe admits that many farm-
ers find it difficult to talk
about estate planning and
farm transfers and often 75 -
year -old farmers will talk to
their 52 -year-old sons like
they're only 15.
Stop Working in Retirement
The farm broadcaster also
warns farmers to leave work
behind when they retire.
"Many people die a few
years after leaving their job.
When my dad retired he said
'All I want to do is read mys-
teries and sit outside; vii the
porch and watch the birds.'
He lived until 86," said Daly.
"I used to walk through the
London library and look at
the hooks thinking this is a
lifetime of reading. And -now
with the Internet, there's sev-
eral lifetimes out there: 1
don't want to work after 1
retire. You have to learn to let
