Debate is not all sweetness
and' light on the preferred
option announced recently
by the Huron Perth District
Health Council task force on
health and hospital restructur-
ing. It has been termed both
a "sell out" and "cop out" in
the past week.
The plan would retain all
eight hospitals in the two
counties, although at an esti-
mated saving
cent..
One of the task force's four
basic assumptions when it
began its study was "at a
minimum, all restructuring
options for Huron Perth
should plan for a reduction in
operating funds by at least 20
per cent (net)." The Ministry
of Health asked for savings in
this range. •

mendations to the Ontario

uring Commission.
Some supporting Goderich
hospital now consider they
were "sold out" in the
Process that led to the selec-
tion of this latest preferred
option, over the first three
options that were made pub-
lic in November in which the
Goderich facility played a
more prominent role.
And Verna Steffler, the
Chair of a Wingham citizens'
action committee instrumen-
tal in opposing those initial
three options, says the new
preferred option is a "cop
out"
"I don't think Duncan
Sinclair (chairman of the
commission) will accept 13
per cent," she told the
Wingham Advance -Times.
"His history has been to
change DHC recommenda-
tions of 20 per cent cuts to 30
per cent.
I think this is a pacifier,
'You've got your hospitals -
You should be happy ' and let
the commission do the dirty
work."
