Blyth Festival reports surplus for '96
Attendance for last sum-
mer's season at the Blyth
Festival was 69 per cent of
capacity and the hoard of
directors for the Blyth Centre
for the Arts reports a surplus
of $43,000 for 1996.
It is the third season in a
row Blyth's lxx)ks have been
in the black, after its financial
crisis in 1993.
"The effect of the crisis in
'93 has made us conscious 01
how vulnerable the Festival
is. and how hard to keep alive
creativity and risk without
alienating our audience,"
notes artistic director Janet
Amos in a press release.
"This year we began to take
risks over and above the nat-
ural risks associated with
doing new work. 1 am very
excited by the results and the
audience response.
"One of the Blyth Festival's
greatest assets is the incredi-
ble sense of Company which
is created because we work in
repertory," Amos says. This
is one of the reasons for
Blyth's survival and contin-
ued growth."
FINAL SEASON
This is Amos' final season
at Blyth and the search is
underway for her replacc-
.ment for 1998.
Levy stays same
The Ausahle Bayfield
Conservation Authority's
general level for 1997
remains $344,337, and
Seaforth's 2.3212 per cent
apportionment is likewise.the
same, $7,987.
ABCA's official notice to
Seaforth Council notes "this
represents the fifth year the
total general levy has been
held at the status quo or
unchanged."
This season's surplus is par-
tially attributed to five extra
performances of Barndance
Live and an extra perfor-
mance of Villa Eden,
Attendance for all shows
was 29.150 and box office
sales contributed 41 per cent
of the area theatre's summer
season revenue.
1997 PLAYS
The Festival plans five
plays at the Main Stage and
one at the nearby Garage the-
atre for the upcoming season.
Barndance Live returns at the
end of the season, then will
go on a short tour of south-
western Ontario. marking the
first time the Festival has
toured since 1993.
The season will also sec a
new production of one of the
most famous plays previous-
ly premiered at Blyth,
Governor General 's Drama
award winner Anne Chislett's
Quiet in the Land, about con-
flict within an Amish family
during World War I.
