The Victoria Order of
Nurses (VON) is celebrating
its 100th anniversary this
year and during VON week,
January 19 to 25.
Lady Aberdeen, wife of the
then Governor General of
Canada and first president of
the VON. designed the walk-
ing suits for the first four
nurses who had to go to the
Klondike gold fields to help
care for the hundreds of sick
and injured miners who had
followed "The Trail of '98." '
The four original nurses.
Margaret Payson, Rachel
Hanna, Georgea Powell and
Amy Scott, were 14 days on
the trail and escorted by the
Canadian military expedition
being sent to the Yukon.
Today. travelling conditions
are a little easier.and territory
doesn't reach quite so far for
the VON nurses of Huron
County.
Although the Huron -Perth
Branch of the VON is not
one of the original groups in
Canada, it does have a long
history. "The VON came to
Stratford in 1908. It was a

ten in 1973 for VON's 75th
anniversary..
"Expansion took place as
ttie needs of the various com-
munities arose. Mitchell was
one of the first areas
involved. Then in 1966 the
communities•of St. ,Marys..
Sebringville, Shakespeare
and Tavistock came under the
VON's service.
"By 1971, due to the intro-
duction of the Home Care
Program, the Stratford VON
Branch was asked to extend
its boundaries to include
•Seaforth.'Clinton and the
townships of McKillop.
Hullett and Tuckersmith in
Huron County."

area. Other VON nurses from •
this area include Diana Steep
of Seaforth, Janice

and Cathy' Campbell_ of

Moore. who has been with
the VON since 1971 with the
exception of the years" 1973-

her children, finds working
for the 100 -year-old organi-
zation "interesting and chal-
lenging."
"I enjoy meeting people in
their homes and the flexibili-
ty and independence with the
nursing care. People are
happy to be in their home,"

"They make me feel very
welcome in their home. It's a
chance to work with the
whole Tamil -y and help the
family."
Moore says there's new
challenges for every tiomc-
she visits and a variety to her
work.
"We visit new mothers whei
are discharged early; young
children recovering .from
surgery or serious illness: '
help people with their med-
ications after surgery:. visit
people recovering from acci-
dents. The most challenging
work is with the palliative
care patients."
•Moore says the variety of
medication available now to
deal with pain makes it easier
for palliative patients to man-
age at home.
