Cost to pave SERC smoking area $10,000 BY MICHELE GREENE SSP News Staff Separate school trustees were not supportive of creat- ing a paved area where sec- bndary students could smoke at the Stratford Education and Recreation Centre (SERC). The City of Stratford rec- on?mended the Huron -Perth Roman Catholic Separate Schodl Board, the Perth County Board of Education and the city share the project- ed $10,000 cost of paving a 15 -foot x 16 -foot area on a comer that belongs to the city at the SERC site. The paved area would be at Forman St. and Oakdale St., which runs through the SERC site, in Stratford. "They want to pave it so the kids don't stand in the mud [and smoke]. I say, 'tough .luck,"" said Stratford Trustee Ron Marcy. The Ontario Tobacco Act prohibits smoking on'school property. As a result, students who smoke leave school property and stand on neigh- bors' properties to smoke. As a result, students are some- times too close to traffic and litter. Superintendent Gates Blanchette 'said schools across the province are facing the same problem. Thursdays Diners stayed to hear the Zurich Mennonite Praise Group. Everyone joined in singing beautiful Christmas favorites. Afterward, fellowship and refreshments were shared. • Resident Bakers met Friday afternoon and produced deli- cious almond bark and chocolate peanut butter bars. We had several willing taste testers. Please note the winners of our Christmas draw. The gift basket was won by Jean Simpson; knitted shawl by Shirley Stone and the baby quilt and pillow by Janis Butson. Coming Events: Dec. 19, 7 p.m. Birthday party with Sherry McCall's dancers; 21, 7 p.m.: Resident Christmas Party with Bill Clark and band. Appearance by Santa Claus; 31, 7 p.m.: New Years Eve party with progressive euchre.
