Towns on
periphery
of counties
CONTINUED from page I
a detailed analysis would he
done on information gathered
and a selection of .the pre-
ferred option would be made.
Following that there 'would
be "further consultation,
implementation and reinvest-
ment planning as well as
governance issues."
Question Period
Dr. John Longstaff of RR 2
Seaforth led off the questions
of the first session. He stated
that it was an "impossible
task to solve. the problems in
Huron -Perth."
"With the exception of
Scaforth and Clinton, all oth-
ers (towns) are on the periph-
ery of the counties." He sug-
gested expanding the zones.
•Longstaff said the senior
population will increase in
the next decade or so because
of the aging haby boomers.
As well. there's a trend for
people in the cities to take up
residence in rural areas in
retirement.
"We've figured out how
Many keds we need but
haven't decided how to dis-
tribute them," answered
Gillis.
"We have been kept abreast
of .what's happening in other'
areas. The restructuring com-
mittee will have the provin-
cial perspective." she added.
One memher of the audi-
ence asked if the DHC would
consider moving hack the
deadline to decide the pre-
ferred option.
"We will consider (delaying
the decision) if we have to.
But we have done a lot of
public consultation," said
Hook. "Difficult decisions
won't he made easier by
extending the process," she
added,
"The last open house
(Thursday) is 'three days
before the meeting (to decide
the final option). Is that
enough time to decide?"
asked one resident.
"We go though the infor-
mation , following each open
house," answered Gillis.
Rent Out Beds
"Let's do something with
the 70 keds, in Huron that
aren't being used," comment-
ed one audience member.
"I've talked to people in
Perth. '::r:re's a six nionth to
two year wait for old age
Nimes. You could make
$1.200 a month for each bed.
If you do that it would keep
every FR open."
"The DHC does have the
long term care committee
looking at it," answered
Hook.
Ruth Hildebrand, adminis-
trator of thc Scaforth Manor,
said there arc some empty
beds in Huron's long term
care facilities.
There was a comment that
in five years there's gaffing to
be a shortage of beds in
Perth.
People were encouraged to
put their suggestions on thc
feedback form.
The form asked participants
to ."please indicate the
strengths and weaknesses" of
each of the three possible
options and "any thoughts or
advice that can help the task
force make the challenging
decisions that lay ahead. The
second question stated:
"Please indicate if you have a
concern that something has
been overlooked or not con-
sidered in the above options."
Hospitals in Huron and
Perth had an opportunity
Monday to make presenta-
tions to the DHC in Mitchell.
Alternatives to the three
options were presented.
