Plans to purchase fire truck defeated
BY DAVID EMSLIE
SSP News Staff
For the second time this
year, plans to purchase a new
fire truck for the Clinton and
Arca Fire bepartment were
iefeated by fire board munic-
ipalities.
In June, a motion was put
before municipalities in the
Clinton and Area Fire Board
to buy a truck to replace a 27 -
year -old model. It. was defeat-
ed when the Townships of
Stanley, Goderich and
Tuckersmith voted against.
Members of a committee of
firefighters continued to study
options. In November' they
explained how they felt a new
truck is a safety issue for
both firefighters and the com-
munity. In a presentations to
councils, firefighters also said
with a the custom cab, an ini-
tial attack on a fire could be
made with six.
The motion to accept the
fire truck committee's pro-
posal to purchase a new Hub
custom cab fire truck with a
price of $237,598.63 was
passed unanimously by
Clinton Council. The truck
purchase was also passed by
the councils in Hullett and
Goderich Townships. but
defeated by Stanley and
Tuckersmith.
Tuckersmith, which indicat-
ed an interest in purchasing a
new truck, does not want to
purchase the Hub custom cab.
Tuckersmith told the fire
board the fire department,
"has provided a satisfactory
service to the area with a two -
person responding vehicle."
Stanley Township passed a
two-part motion, stating first
that it did not support the pur-
chase of the truck with the
custom Hub cab, and further
that, "The Clinton Fire Area
Board be advised that council
wishes a truck to be pur-
chased in the price range
approved by the Township of
Stanley" in correspondence
dated June 27 of this year.
Township Clerk Ansberth
Willert said in June corre-
spondence council said
$200,000 was adequate. She
added that while the township
is not opposed to the pur-
chase, it feels that it can be
made within the stated price
range.
The truck committee is sup-
posed to make another recom-
mendation to the fire area
board regarding the truck at
its Jan. 8 meeting.

in 1996 and an expected cut
of about $55,000 in 1997,
Thompson said the munici-

meetings so far, have been
pleased.
The proposed budget for
1997 is 5743.934 with an
expected surplus of $21,065.
To help Beal with the fund-
ing cuts, first announced in
1995, the MVCA is working
'on a number of cost-saving
For example, in 1997, the
Ausable Conservation
Authority will be looking
after the payroll for the
MVCA while the MVCA
will be sharing some aspects
of planning with Ausable.
The MVCA - has also
reduced its board from 29
members to 12.
Member municipalities
have been placed+ into 12
groups'of two to four munici-
palities. Each of those groups
will be allowed one member
on the board.
Goderich and Colborne
Township are in one•group
while Goderich Township is

HulIet Township. Lucknow is

and Kinloss Township.

cils to discuss their views on

at Wawanosh Park in its loca-
tion on a flood plain. The
MVCA is also looking at
charging a day -use fee next
year.

ning to look into more part-
nerships with service clubs,
volunteers and community
groups for the maintenance
and management of its day -
use properties.
The MVCA operates 22
properties as "conservation
area facilities" including 490
acres at the Saratoga Swamp
and 192 acres at Falls
Reserve, the two largest of its
properties.
The authority's mission is
to preserve, restore, enhance
and sustain watershed soil
and resources.
Part of its duties includes
forest management and the
implementation of manage-
ment plans for its properties.
