The Hawks missed the playoffs last year and were eliminated first round the season before that, but they appear to be back, having earned points in all eight games in the past month, 13 out of a possible 16, and are now but one point back of the Cents in the fourth and final playoff position of the five - team division and they have a game in hand. The North Middlesex Stars, who Seaforth meets in Parkhill in their next start Saturday night, arc only three points back of Mitchell, in the basement. Seaforth midgets ready to defend Silver Stick title Seaforth begins defence of last year's division champi- onship at the Wingham Regional Midget Silver Stick tournament with a game against Kincardine tomorrow (Thursday) night at 6:15. The regional midget tourna- ment began Monday with 16 teams, split into two divi- sions (called B-1 and B-2), each in turn split into group- ings of four. The Seaforth midgets will play a round-robin with Kincardine, Mt. Forest and Tavistock. The top two squads then playoff ,with the top two from the other sec- tion of this B-1 division, made up of Listowel, Mitchell, Port Elgin and New Hamburg. ' The winner advances to the International championship in Sarnia in January. Zurich, Tceswater, Mildmay, Shallow Lake, Wingham; Howick, Luckngw and Stephen Township play- off in the B-2 division with the winner advancing to Forest in January. ' This is the 33rd consecutive year a midget tournament has been held in Wingham, and the II th annual edition of the regional Silver Stick there. The various finals arc Sunday, the big one as far as Seaforth is concerned at 2:30 p.m. at Wingham. Spunk not enough for Socialites • SOCIALITES 0 POLAR ICE 1 Socialites seemed to be having a little problem scor- ing goals. The team has Tots of spunk but players seem to get robbed by goal posts, crossbars, legs, bodies etc. Polar Ice welcomed Bc.tty Glanville out to her first game as plenty of chatter was an ongoing thing. Their lone goal was scored by Liz Becker. assisted by Darlene Copeland. Great game by both teams. WINTHROP 2 • PARR LINE 4 Winthrop keep going and going and pop in two terrific goals as they blow it by Parr Line's goalies Norm and Kuss "Goes". S coring Winthrop's goals wcrc speed- ster Janice Finlayson and power -driver Jen Gallagher, with a:ssigtancc from Lisa Van Den Heuvcl, Christa Lconhardt and Janette Masse. Parr Linc barely kccos the lead as hot -shot goals were accumulated by Sharon Whitfield, Cheryl Kruse, Slim Kim Lee and Ficsty Tanya Eckert. Lots of passes from Cathy Innes, Norah Eckert and Glenda Chaput. Continued on next page. The Centenaires also hosted Lambeth's Lancers to a 5-3 loss Friday night, to earn a weekend split. The third- place local juniors aren't too far out of second, on the other hand, just three points, still with a relatively healthy 10-7-1 record. They also travel to Langton for a second road game this weekend, Sunday at 8 p.m. Many regulars missed last Sunday night's loss at home, due to injury or illness, which is becoming a problem. Sniper Mark Van Dooren, for instance, is now out indefi- nitely because he is sick. Mitchell took the lead with six seconds left in thc second period when Greg Houben put a nice feed from Eric Staffen behind Cents' goal - tender Scott Wood. But Jason Henderson got that one back in the first minute of the third. Staffen scored what stood as the win- ner with a little over eight minutes left, before, McLeod got the insurance goal. The game got a tad slow after that, with numerous lit- tle_ skirmishes on the card, a couple of them instigated by Seaforth, as the ref saw it. The Puritans were not amused. Mitchell outshot Seaforth 34-20. Troy Chessell got the win in net for the Hawks. He McLlwain injures knee Veteran pro hockey player Dave McLlwain of Seaforth is out of thc Cleveland Lumberjacks' lineup for awhile after injuring the medial collateral ligament of his right kncc. It is not torn though. Dave picked up the injury in an International Hockey League game in the middle of this month. The game before he had a six -point night, scor- ing a goal and five assists. was also between the pipes when the two teams tied 2-2 at Mitchell earlier in the schedule. CENTS 5 LANCERS 3 The short-staffed Cents were even more so after Shaun Anstett re-injured a shoulder and left the game. But Richard Hurley was a ball of fire and picked up the slack. The rough-and-tumble rookie winger from Stratford, who the Cents plucked from that city's house league, scored two times, had another couple of breakaways and just missed tapping home the hat trick with a back -hand that seemed destined. Steve Mclnally, Jeremy • McNichol and Jason Murray also scored for the Cents, who had a 5-1 lead early in the third, but were out -shot on the game 29-27. Wood and Lyndon shared Seaforth's goaltending duties. It was a tame game. Each team took three minors, a fighting major and game mis- conduct.
