Carroll says the federal
AP and the new provincial
"TAP" (Telecommunications
Access Project) sponsored by
(he Harris government. are
ways to "get the public and
private sector together."
Virtual Society
He told committee mem-
hers they have a chance to
estahlish the first virtual his-
torical society in Canada.
"Then the whole world can
have access to Seaforth's his-
tory. Seaforth could estahlish
a worldwide reputation as a
community that celebrates
history," he said.
"Don't have an ordinary
historical. society," said
Carroll, past president of the
Huron County Historical
Society.
"We must as a community
get together to preserve histo-
ry.,
Multi -Media History
Presently a multi -media
history course is being devel-
oped at Seaforth District
High School (SDHS), the
first of its kind in Canada,
'says Carroll. Plans are to
have a curriculum clearing
house in Toronto eventually
sell the program to other
schools across Canada.
"If we don't do something
to make SDHS special; it
won't he there by the year
2000. There's room right
now, today, for all kids at
Seaforth to go to Clinton
(CHSS)," the director of edu-
cation warned. •
"You can add that to the list
of stores closing on Main
Street," said'Carroll. He said
he wasn't saying this "to be
mean." He said Ontario is
broke and we've got to catch
up.
He said we could accom-
plish more in Huron "if we
get off our stupid turf hors -
its. '
While talking about the cur-
rent state, of provincial
,reforms to education, Carroll
said' 100 of 166 directors of
education will lose their jobs
in the next month. "I hope to
be one of the 66.
He says if Seaforth takes
the lead in using new tech-
nology and realizes the eco-
nomic spin-offs "we can
begin the process of rebuild-
ing Main Street and rebuild-
ing the high school."
"If you're looking for
something that's the future.
this is it."
About the only funding
'education minister John
Snobelin is making available
to schools these days is
money to develop computer
and Internet programs, says
Carroll.
The committee later dis-
cussed the idea of a virtual
historical society and: agreed
that ideally a showcase or
museum of memorabilia
could still he developed
along with an Internet home
page on Seaforth's history.
"We need more than one
avenue for our treasures."
said committee member Dick
Burgess.
Funding for Project?
A suggestion by Catherine
Campbell of the Ministry of
Citizenship, Culture and
Recreation was to possibly
have a link with heritage and
local tourism on the Internet
and develop a tour package
for people interested in
exploring heritage. Campbell
also said there may be some
funding available from her
ministry to estahlish an
Internet project on local her-
itage.
The committee is interested
in forming a historical soci-
ety for Seaforth and instruct-
ed Cathy Garrick to contact
the Ontario Historical Society
to find out more information
for the next meeting tenta-
tively scheduled for
Wednesday, January 15,
1997.
