Local scullers help
Brock best Queens
By Sarah Johnston
Two of last year's grads
from Scaforth District High
School have taken up
sculling and recently helped
Brock's novice eights rowing
team heat Queens by about a
boat -length to win an Ontario
universities championship 'at
Henley in Port Dalhousie.
Heather McMillan and
Lyndsey Salverda.- were in
the seventh and eighth scats
respectively of thc deter-
mined crew, as Brock won
the event for the first time in
16 year~. •
Since their first week of
school at Brock University in
St. Catharines the former
SIMS students have endured
the hours of strenuous tryouts
and 5:3(1 a.m. practices to
become two of the 12 mem-
bers of the.championship
team.

as they lost to the new
"Hitrncn team." Cyclones
had ample chances to score
but were a little short handed
on learn players and on no
goals at all. Mr. Hammer
Cyclone goalie made plenty
of saves as the Eckert boys
drilled plenty of shots at him.
Now, this Hittnen team has
uitc a variety of players,

arr Line, Red Rustlers,
umpers, Raiders and yes,
some Easy Riders and you
put them altogether and you
end up with a lot of great tal-
ent, as these. boys clean up on

finals al Henley.
TAKE THAT! - .
The team proved to the
crowd and to themselves that
troubles during earlier com-
petitions this year were mere-
ly technical and since over-
come, rowing in Brock's
finest boat.
The race was 2000m.
During the heats Brock. fin-
ished second to McGill. after
rowing what McMillan indi-
cated to he the hardest that
they though they could.
The finals saw Brock com-
peting against Queens, two
McGill boats and two teams•
from Trent. At the halfway
point Queens was in the !cad,
but Brock seized the opportu-
nity when the leaders experi-
enced technical difficulty and
ended up winning by almost
a boat length.
The girls were greeted
afterwards by a small but
supportive home crowd.
They were exhausted but
overwhelmingly happy.
"We made a lot of people
mad today," said Heather in
reference to other teams.
"They wcrc all yelling at us
at the beginning 'Brock's no
good."'You shouldn't he
here'. .
"I guess we showed them."
