At the Nov. 7 meeting of Huron County Council, the county agreed to request a meeting with the provincial Minister of Transport Al Paladini to say the county is not in a position to accept the the transfer of highways 83, 84 and 87 without adequate compensation. The minister will also be asked for the $400,0(X) needed to reconstruct the Black River Bridge (built in 1947) on Highway 83. At the Sept. 5 meeting of council, the county was informed that by April 1, 1997, the province will trans- fer Highway 83 from Highway 21 to the Perth County boundary; Highway 84 from Highway 21 to Hensall; and Highway 87 from Highway 86 to the Wellington County boundary. The transfer represents a 70.6 kilometre increase to the county road system. The county will receive a one-time only grant of $4,465,950 to compensate these transfers. A June 1995 study, however, indicates that a total of $6,442,500 would he needed to address the needs of cial funding. the transferred highways and The suggestion put forward their bridges. as a preferred course of action The short fall will have to was for the county to continue he picked up by the county. an aggressive updating of the That was the basis of the roads system for the next few decision to ask the provincial years so that future eonstruc- minister for a meeting. tion and maintenance costs In a roads report from the can be reduced.
