his movement' a meeting •of
he officers -and men in this
'icinity, who were on service
n that Memorable occasion,
75 years ago

Commercial Hotel, Seaforth,•
on Tuesday evening next, at 8
o'clock. This meeting is
called at the instance of the
promoters of the movement,
who are prominent military
men in different parts of the
Province, and who desire the
co-operation of -all their col-
leagues in arms in 1866, of
whom there arc still a number
in this vicinity.

The handsome monument

sculpture and represents a
young soldier standing on the
grave 6f a fallen Comrade in
Flanders the whole inscribed
"In Flanders Field," on the

a record of the part played by
the officers of the Canadian
Bank -of Commerce in the

PLAQUE FOUND 64
YEARS LATER!
JANUARY 16, 1985
A plaque commemorating
members of the Town of
Seaforth who were employ-
ees of the Seaforth Bank of
Commerce and served in
World War 1 was recently
discovered in the basement of
the hank.
Larry McGrath said he
found the solid bronze plaque
behind some oil healers that
he had been commissioned to
move.
The Seaforth branch of the
hank has donated thc plaque.
along with a hook listing
those from the hank who
were a part of WWI, to the

MARCH 22, 1946
Lengthy and enthusiastical-
ly carried out preparations for
a "Welcome Home Day" cul-
minated on Monday night,
when the municipalities of
Seaforth, Tuckersmith,
McKillop and Hihhert
Townships paid a heartfelt
tribute to veterans of the
Army, Navy and Air Force.
Two banquets, one served
in Northside United Church,
and the second in First
Preshyterian Church, were
attended by nearly 400 veter-
ans. and were followed by a
program. and dance in
Cardno's Opera Hall, which
was attended by several hun-
dred more.
At First ' Church R.E.
Shaddick, Warden of Huron
County, and Mayor J.J. Ciuff,
of Seaforth. welcomed the
veterans, while the welcome
in the United Church was
extended by William Tuer,
Warden of Perth County,
Messages from Defence
Minister Douglas Abbott and
W.H. Golding, MP for Huron
South, were read at the func-
tion. in his telegraphed mes-
sage of greeting, Defence
Minister Abbott said men and
women from thc Seaforth
district, who had served with
the armed forces, had added
lustre not only to their home
town, hut to Canada's fight-
ing services.
"The pride of all Canadians
in the achievement of their
boys and girls in the armed
forces has shown itself in
many different forms." he
said, "hut perhaps. unique in
Canada, is the idea of setting
aside a special 'Welcome
Home Day.'
50 years ago
Flannery receives medal
JULY 5, 1946
Sergeant J.E. Flannery,
Seaforth received the
Military Medal from
Viscount Alexander of Tunis,
Governor-General' of Canada,
at the investiture held at
Windsor: Ont., on -Friday,
June 28. The citation which
accompanied the award, stat-
ed that: "Sgt. Flannery, in
command of the leading pla-
toon at Bredden-berg,
Germany, personally rushed
the enemy and cleared the
area with complete disregard
for his own safety."
