Twice they got off on the wrong foot against good teams by spotting them hefty leads, then couldn't quite catch up. Sunday afternoon in Seaforth they trailed the defending Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D"evel- opment League champion Exeter Hawks 3-0 four min- utes into the second period. before Ifinally putting the puck where it belongs and battling back to within a goal midway through the third. The Hawks still ruled, clinching a 5-3 win by an empty -net goal with a little more than a minute remain- ing. Last Tuesday night at Mt. Brydges was the same script, only quicker. The Cents were three goals back of the Bulldogs in a blink, with the anthem hardly out of the air, before they decided to make a game of it, which they did, but ended up losing 6-4. Seaforth falls to third in the five -team Morenz Division, now behind Lucan too, with the North Middlesex Stars FLASH! chomping at their butts, three points back with two games in hand. Mitchell's Hawks in the cellar are only one point back of them. The Cents still have seven wins, four losses and a tie. But only one of those wins, against Tavistock in their home opener in Seaforth six weeks ago, has come against an opponent with a winning record - over .500, with more wins than kisses. The Hawks are in first in the Morenz and Mt. Brydges is an equally solid.squad this season, tied for first in the Thomas Division of the West conference, with three games in hand on defending division champ Thamesford. The Seaforth juniors host the Wellesley Applejacks Friday night in Seaforth at 8:30, then travel to Port Stanley for a game against the Lakers Saturday, same. starting time. HAWKS 5 CENTS 3 The Hawks were coining off their first loss of the sea- son Friday night in Exeter:6 5 to archest-enemy Lucan. The Irish scored five power- play goals in that upset. CONTINUED on pg. 16 Impact forward Chris Kennedy was nursing a back injury and tot in Exeter's lineup Su day's game in Seaforth. But for some reason the Cents came out flat. They haven't beaten Exeter on their home ice for several seasons. Seaforth held a 12-•1 c d'c in shots after the first'(t nil - utes, but trailed 1-0 because Darren Kints repeatedly got the best of them in the Exeter net. Tim Barton's powerplay goal finally put Seaforth on the board in the second, but they still trailed 4-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.. Another powerplay goal, this one by Steve Mclnally, and a nifty shorthanded marker by Steve Geiger at 10:14 pulled the Centenaires to within one, before Chad Gilfillan's empty -nester with 1:13 left got the Hawks danc- ing around and thinking more about post -game tea "at Bubba's." Jason Rutledge, Joey MacDonald, Chris McDonald and Greg Goodwin got the other Exeter goals. The multitude of minor penalties called by referee ROCKED! The W riding OHA champion Exeter Hawks once again rocked ti IL entenaires 5-3 in Seaforth Sunday. That's the Cents' J.C. kirk of Goderich in white. Final shots were 34 to 24 for Seaforth. BULLDOGS 6 C4TH 4 The Centenaires hit the ice like a herd of frozen turtles. They were l laying their third road game in five nights, but still might as well have stayed on the bus early, down by three goals 9:13 into the first. Mt. Brydges had anoth- er called back in the first 30 seconds, which had it count= ed would have made for an even longer evening. It could very easily have been a.6-0 for the hometowners who clearly dominated the early going. But the Cents woke up, got the kinks out and pulled to within one when Mark Van Dooren scored on the power- play, his second goal of the game, to make it 4-3 at 10:28 of the second. That's the way the period ended. The Cents coughed up another quick pair in 40 sec- onds starting at the 2:08 point of the third, which made short work of the comeback. J.C. Kirk scored the final goal of the game for Seaforth with 28 seconds left. Shaun Anstett got the Cents' other goal, on the powerplay. The Bulldogs also got two of their goals on the power- play. Captain Brad Carroll and Mike Michalski each scored twice. - IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM INNERFIT For a couple of months now people have been calling asking: When are all those interesting ' seminars you present happening?
