History. of Seaforth W.I.
Seaforth Women's Institute
was organized in spring of
1928. Thelma Dale, a char-
tered member, still takes an
active interest in the branch.
Early in 1997 they will cel-
ebrate their 69th anniversary
as well as Federated
Women's Institute of Ontario
centennial celebration.
Members are aware that the
need for the organization is
as great now as it was in
1897.
At the turn of -the century,
co-founders Adelaide
Hoodless and Erland Lee saw
the nccd for an organization
to allow "rural women to dis-
cuss their problems and work
together to improve their
standard of homemaking and
citizenship."
Today W.I. members lobby
for improved laws, provide
leadership training for both
members and non-mcmhcrs
and educate through work-
shops in food nutrition and
crafts. They encourage com-
munity mcmhcrs to work
together to find solutions to
societal problems and
encourage citizens to accept
responsibility for their
actions and their surround-
ings.
The Seaforth branch spon-
sors three 411 Homemaking
McKillop #1 4-H
and Life Skill clubs, and are
justly proud of their 41-1 lead-
ers and club members.
In 1995 - The Huron
County Women's Institute
Scholarship was presented to
Karen Vansteeland RR 4
Seaforth. In 1996 to Janet
Van de Hoven of RR 4
Seaforth.
For the past several years
two main money projects
have been a Lottery on a
homemade quilt, afghan
handy -work of Thelma Dale ,
a food voucher and a cour-
tesy food booth at Seaforth
Fair on the Thursday.
It is through the generosity
of the community supporting
them the branch is able to
support three Homemaking
41-1 Clubs, local undertakings
like Huron Hiker Tour, Santa
Clause Parade, Lions Park
and Pool, Wreath on Nov. 11,
South Western Children's
Hospital, Huron County
Children's Aid bursary,
Seaforth Hospital,
Remembering sick and shut -
ins, Bereaved, other local
charities and always ready to
help in local disasters.
Quite an accomplishment

who is 90 years young and
nine 80 years young.

Woodworking club talks safety
By Linda Vogels
On Oct. 17, the St.
Columbia) 4-1 Woodworking
club talked about safety. We
talked about wearing safety
glasses when .you are work-
ing with wood, and that you
should keep your working
arca neat and clean because
you could step on a nail or
injure yourself.
Then we counted some
annual rings on a Klock of
wood. The second thing we
did ssas.lind out how difficult
it was to do things without
fingers. The third thing we
did was hammer a nail into
softwood and then a piece of
hardwood. We also named
different types of wood and
where you would find them.
We also voted for our club
executive. Thc President is
Meagan O'Reilly, Vice
President is Melissa
O'Rourke, Secretary is Kevin
Murray, and Press Reporter is
Linda Vogels.
