Cents keep pace
with pair of wins
The Seaforth Centenaires
kept in the thick of the fray
in. the Morenz Division of the
OHA Junior "D"evelopment
League last week with a cou-
ple of wins, one of them in
overtime, and a loss.
Mark Van Dooren and Tim
Barton each scored twice at
Lambeth Sunday night as the
Cents laced the hometown
Lancers 7-4. Steve Geiger
scored with a little more than
a minute left in overtime to
lift the Centenaires to a 5-4
win over the North
Middlesex Stars at the
Seaforth and District
Community Centres Friday.
It made partial amends for a
lackluster 5-1 loss at Lucan
last Wednesday.
The. four points from three
games in the week gives
Seaforth eight on the season,
leaving them even with
Exeter, although the defend-
ing OHA and division -cham-
pion Hawks are undefeated
and have two games in hand.
North Middlesex and Lucan
are but two points hack. both
only another two points up
on Mitchell, currently trailing
the Morenz pack.
The Centenaires play two
out -of -division games on
home ice in Seaforth this
weekend. Friday they host
Ayr and Sunday night it's
Belmont. Both games start at
8:30 p.m.
CENTS 7 LANCERS 4
Seaforth came on strong
with four goals, including an
empty -natter by Aaron
Parsons, in the third period.
They led 2-1 after the first
d only 3-2 after the second:

ed tally. a of Barton's
goals (he now has seven this
season) came on the power=
play. J.C. Kirk and Steve
Geiger also scored.
The Lancers took eight of
thc 15 minor penalties called
in the contest.
CENTS 5 STARS 4 (OT)

gave this game away, as a 4-2
lead melted late in the third.
and Parkhill pulled even and
earned a point in the stand-
ings with a powerplay goal
with 34 seconds left in regu-
lation.
Last season the Cents
couldn't buy a win in over-:
time, but Geiger got that
monkey off the back of this
year's edition of "the Green"
when he bounced a clean
'winner high off the twine to
the Stars goalie's stick side.
Another crown
St. Columban's men's soc-
cer team won its fourth title
this season last week in its
final games. a round-robin
for the Division Two champi-
onship of the Western
Ontario Soccer League.
They beat Bluewater 2-1 at
Sarnia Saturday. after tying
London Latinos 1-1 at St.
Columban last Thursday.
Dave Murray scored on a
penalty shot that stood as the
winner in Saturday's'game at
Sarnia, after Steve Ryan
equalized. It was a scoreless
draw at the half. but
Bluewater scored early in the
second to take a 1-0 lead.
.Red cards abounded. St.
Colum,ban was down to eight
players by the end of the
game and Bluewater was
down to nine. .
Brian Melady scored on a
penalty kick to earn the draw
at St. Columban Thursday.

because of his retirement
plans.
Shaun Ansett scored two
times for Seaforth on the
•powerplay. Barton bagged
another powerplay marker,
• and Mark Van Dooren, who
is starting to come on, got
one even -strength.
Greg Matthison and Jered
Munro admirably anchored
the short-staffed Seaforth
defence in both weekend
wins, and -Mike Harvey
helped Sunday. Scott Wood
made big saves when it
counted to record the goal-
tending victories.
Matthison arrived late in
the first period Friday, rush-
ing from a soccer banquet in
Stratford where he had just
won MVP honours, on an
SOS from the Seaforth
coaching staff.
The Stars spent more time
in the box. The Cents had 18 -
minutes worth of penalties,
compared. to North
Middlesex's 31 plus a mis-
conduct.
IRISH 5 C_ ENTS 1
Wednesday just wasn't
Seaforth's night at Lucan.
They played poorly, partic-
ularly the last half of the
game.
The game was scoreless
until midway through the
, second period when the Irish
heat Cents' goaltender Chris
Lyndon twice in 22 seconds,
and the score remained 2-0
until Lucan got another pair
in the•first three minutes of
the third. The only shotto
evade Irish goaltender
Nathan Maudsley was kind
of a fluke he wasn't expect-
ing from the Seaforth side.of
centre -ice. No question the
shot was fired and the goal
was actually scored by Terry
Barton. For some reason that
.even Scott Van Dooren can't
•
figure. the goal was credited-
to
reditedto him. .
The yipping on the bench
got so had. when the game
got out of reach Seaforth
coaches sent their defence
out as forwards. and vice --
versa. since. hoth, by the
sounds of it. thought the
other's jobs so simple.
The Centenaires out -shot
the Irish 35-31 and took 32
minutes in minor penalties
and a game.misconduct. corri-
pared to Lucan's 14 -minutes
im minors.
Defenceman Brent Hulley
was also given- a match
penalty for spearing with 21
seconds left in the game,
resulting in a minimum tour -
game OHA suspension.

desire to move -waste man-
agement towards a user -pay
system.
The committee was satis-
fied with the level of recy-
cling. but felt more had to be
done to prolong the life of the.
Walton site. User -pay sys-
tems in other municipalities
have drastically reduced the
Volume of waste landfilled.
With a projected landfill
capacity to around the year
2003.and the fact that Huron
County many not proceed•
with a county landfill site, the
committee decided that a
user -pay system was needed
to reduce the amount of
waste being landfilled.
Reduced provincial trans-
fers is another reason for the
new system. Municipalities
are being forced to look at
alternative methods of opera-
tion, and a user -pay waste
management is one method
that, a number of municipali-
ties are looking at. Those
who produce more will pay
more. those who produce less
will pay less and the waste
management function will be
a smaller percentage of the
overall municipal budget.
