It seems the world in gener-
al has become a whimpier
place. Not kinder and gentler,
but simply whimpier.
Those in public life,
whether they be politicians,
bureaucrats, media personali-
ties, or sports figures should
expect and accept that they
are constantly in open season.
If they can't accept the hulls -
eye of criticism painted on
their collective backs then -
they should recline to private
life.

Wells had faults, but he was
more or less bulletproof
when it came to criticism.
And for that he earned the
respect of most journalists.
The insults and the barbs, for
the most part, bounced off
him. Arid this is a man who
Quebecers consider as evil
incarnate.
Our new-age politicians
seem to have skin that is so
thin it's translucent. Since
when did politicians become
sensitive men and women of
the '90s? They certainly
seem to be more sensitized to
the condition of their own
personas than to the plight of
most of their constituents.
But this move towards a
"thin-skinned" reactionary
political environment has
begun to spill over into'thc
general population. People
don't seem to be able to take.
criticism anymore. Maybe
the suffocating pressures of
our brave new world have
left people with much shorter
fuses or maybe the press on
the whole has become mean-
er. More than likely it is a lit-
tle of both.
No question the press steps
out Of line sometimes in its
rabid pursuit of stories. But
being out of line depends
what side of the fence you
happen to be on. And if that
side of the fence deals with
public money or public poli-
cy - volunteer or otherwise -
then the responsibility of the
position demands heated crit-
icism. The latitude of that
criticism is, and must contin-
ue to be, vast.
Media has the right to offer
an opinion: It may be right. It
may be wrong, but being able
to voice free opinions is the
very foundation of democra-
cy. Without varied opinions.
we become complacent and
exist solely in a vacuum. -
These opinions are only
reflections of what is being
said on the street, in the cof-
fee shops, and in the malls.
The fact that policy makers
don't acknowledge them until
they are repeated in the press -
is certainly part of the prob-
lem.
Like it or not the media has
been and always will be the
public watchdog. And watch-
dogs can and most often do
hark at anything that comes
ncar them.

I want to add my personal
ppeal as a Bell user and a
Citizen in the town of
Seaforth to your intervention
list with respect to thc Bell
application to upgrade
switching equipment in our
Town.
I. 1 am pleased - and will
support the current initiative
including the increase in fees.
This work`is long overdue.
There is a concurrent need,
however.
2. Bell makes reference in
its proposal, albeit much too
quietly, to the option of
expanding the local calling
areas. This clement of the
proposal, I understand,
according to Bell officials, is
not necessary for action in
the Seaforth Arca.
Not!
The requirement -to pay
long distance charges to call
neighbours -in Walton,
Mitchell, Brussels, Exeter
and Godcrich is another
example of the longstanding
communication inequity
imposed on rural customers.
This too must he altered at
this time. In the urban areas,
such as London to our South,
callers can reach as far North
-as Exeter, some 30 miles
away. In my neck of the
woods, in some directions,
you can't call 5 miles!
There has to be something
more in this application than
thc simple act of Bell updat-
ing its antiquated equipment
in small town Ontario.
Service equity is another
aspect as it relates local call-
ing areas - and- the impact
extends well beyond the
needs of private citizens to
-impact on business; health,
education and social service
users in these areas.
i could write reams to
defend my position. if you
like, i'll come to a hearing
and expand on this most rea-
sonable request.
