Your Guide to Vehicle Maitenance
• We know anti -freeze in the winter is
important to prevent freezing, but why is it impor-
tant to have the vehicle's radiator flushed?
A• We hearfrom Brian McDonald of Hart Ford
Mercury "Anti -freeze has an anti -corrosion property,
that through time, deteriorates if not maintained,
causing corrosion in the cooling system. Depending
on the mileage a rad should be flushed every 2 to 3
years." The least expensive part of your car can
often save you the most. Spark plugs and air filters,
motor oil and radiator anti -freeze, do not cost very
much, but can save hundreds of dollars in repair
bills, especially if your car is older.

Why can I here buzzing noises at low
wspee that turn into rumbling when I speed up?
A
• "When your boot seals aren't up to par,
dust and grease can get into your constant velocity
(C.V.) joints. The grease can leak through a hole in
the boot seal and destroy•the C.V. joints. Have
your C.V. joint boot seals checked on a regular basis
and replaced whenever necessary. "Dave Garrick,
Automotive Technician of Wilson Auto Service.
• How can I tell when I'm in danger of
Carbon Dioxide fumes?
•
A• "Carbon Dioxide is odorless and very dan-
gerous. If you detect fumes of any kind see your
technician immediately. Make sure you get your
exhaust system checked on ,a regular basis to avoid
any serious danger. "Bill Brown, Service manager of
Canadian tire Seaforth
• I touch my brake peddle and I detect
strange vibrations. Why is this happening?
A• "Vibrations result from warps in discs
caused by intense heat. Corrosion damaging disc
brake calipers also prevents them from applying bal-
anced pressure to each wheel. Therefore, the brak-
ing capacity is reduced. Check your brakes as often
as necessary depending on how much you drive and
the vibrations start before you replace your shoes or
pads." Cliffe Donaven, Service Manager of Teatero

exterior, oil spraying on a yearly basis is probably
the best value for your money. Warren Benneuies,
proprietor of Mobile Oil Spraying tells us. "The Huron
County area is in the snowbelt and we get alot of
salt on the roads as well as calcium on the gravel
roads in the country, our vehicles need protection
from these elements."
Q,
• Is replacement of a ,cracked or stone -
chipped windshield important?
A.'
We hearfrom Warren Bennewies of Warren
Auto Glass "Yes, the driver needs to able to see
through the windshield. Often times a small crack or
chip can spread accross the entire windshield caus-
ing distorted visablity. Also, the windshield is
designed to hold the weight of a vehicel in case of a
roll over. If your car's windshield is broken, it cannot
do this. For safety reasons the windshield should be
replaced as soon as possible."

• While driving, the only thing between me
and the road are my tires. What is the best way to
maintain and save wear and tear on my tires?
f
A• Marc Robinet o Archie's Service Centre
responds by telling us "There are several ways to
maintaining tires. The first is check the air pres-
sure, the second is to balance the tires, the third is
to rotate tires about every 12,000 km and an align-
ment every year or every second year depending on
how much you drive." Proper maintenance of your
vehicle's tires will ensure your safety, as well as bet-
ter fuel efficiency , saving you money.
