`Rubble' as in trouble
Barton's pair helps Cents torpedo Lakers
Veteran Tim Barton's two
goals; ope on the powerplay,
helped propel the Centenaires
to a 4-3 win over the Port
Stanley Lakers at Seaforth
Friday night.
"Barney 1", as in "Rubble"
is on a bit of a tear early. this
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D"evelopment
League season, with four
goals in the Cents' first three
games, and another four
(including a hat trick) in
Seaforth's final couple of
pre -season exhibition games.
His brother, identical twin
Terry, is "Barney the Second"
but plays defence for the
Seaforth juniors. •
.Their teammates tease both
Barncys as straight out of
Bedrock and The Flinstones,
but they are actually from
Stratford.
Both play with a gleeful
abandon best summed up by
that old saying: "The bigger
they come, the harder they
fall."
Their father, Earl, played
much of his hockey here in
Seaforth in days gone by.
Tim is a sophomore at the
University of Waterloo. He
averaged about a point a
game last season, including
13 goals, in his third go -
round with the Centenaires.
At his current rate he would
end up in the Bobby Hull
bracket with a titch (.66)
more than 50 goals.
This might be hallucinating
on math, but even then
would all be bonus because
Tim is just as valuable to the
Green for his style of relent-
less attack, which wears
down the opposition, particu-
larly when killing penalties.
This the Centenaires had to
do well Friday night, particu-
larly in the second period, in
a knuckle -gnawer that went
down to the wire.
ANYBODY'S GAME
An old Cent, Steve Geiger,
scored his first back in the
fold, and Mark Van Dooren
got the other Seaforth goal.
It was 1-1 after the first
period.
The Cents 'took a 3-1 lead
in the first two minutes of the
second, but played short-
handed for about 14 of the
next 18 minutes, a couple of
times down by two players.
The penalty -killers only
coughed -up one before Van
Dooren restored the two -goal
cushion with Less than two
minutes left in the second.
Port Stanley pulled to one
goal back in the first three
minutes of the final period.
And the game could have
Soccer trophies galore
CONTINUED'from Pg. 5,
er shootout, which St.
Columban took 3-1.
Steve Ryan scored for St.
Columban and Jason Dietz
made the save against the
Londoners. Then Wayne
Ryan did likewise for the
locals, ditto Dietz. Then
Murray made it three -straight
scores for St. Columban, but
Forest ;got one. Sean
Melady's shot was then
saved, but Forest fired wide.
And it was all over but the
party.
Now St. Columban is play- '
ing in this round-robin all
second divisions playoff,
which means nothing save
for the competition, against a
team from Sarnia and another
from London. They play the
London team at St.
Columban in this "Final,
final, final, final" competition
Thursday' nigh( at 6 p.m.
Unless darkness immediately
starts coming later it may
prove difficult to play two 45
minute halves in the -middle '
of those cornfields, out
behind the church, where this
fine soccer club plays.

FUTURE GAMES :
Tonight (Wed): Seaforth at
Lucan, 8: b 5 p.m.
gone either way to the
buzzer.
Seaforth's Scott Wood was
sharper than either of Port
Stanley's puckstoppers, last
year's Cents' back-up goalie
Mike Stephenson and veteran
Laker all-star Brad Jowarski.
Wood faced 38 shots, The
Laker twosome dodged 27.
Referee Joe Celestin tagged
Seaforth with 11 minor
penalties, a major and two
game misconducts. The
Lakers had a half-dozen
minors, a major and a game.
GEIGER'S RETURN
Geiger was signed by the
Cents Tuesday night and a
release was worked out with
the junior B London
Nationals (who are affiliated
with Port Stanley) by early
afternoon Wednesday.
He was top rookie point -
getter on the London junior 13
team last season and tied for
the Nationals' Icad in power-
play goals.
Th. I9 -year-old from
Zwich is in his second year
of kinesiology at. the
University of Western
Ontario and he found the
junior B workload was
affecting his schooling this
year. He said hockey wasn't
fun anymore so decided to
come back to Seaforth,
although many junior teams
coveted his services.
The Cents originally signed
him as a 16 year-old from the
Zurich Thunder, and he only
missed one game in the next
two seasons hcre, scoring 30
goals and 43 assists with a
mere 21 penalty minutes in
79 regular season games.
He also helped the Cents
run off a delightfully unex-
pected team record eight -
straight playoff wins when he
and the Ramcrs, also from
Zurich, played "Shadow" and
Seaforth played "Cinderella"
all the way to the division
finals in 1994-95.
Geiger was named the most
valuable player for the West
Conference in the OHA
Junior "D"evelopment
League all-star game that
spring.
Coach Dave Murray kind of
summed it up for the Cents
when he said, "We are proud
that you chose us," when
Steve signed after Tuesday
night's practice.
He played on a line with
Steve Mclnally and captain
Jason Henderson in Friday
night's game.
Meanwhile, third -year for-
ward Jeff Vollan4 of
Goderich has handed.b his
equipment and left the team,
saying hockey isn't fun any-
more. Ditto for Jeff Klages
who is also talking about
going back to play senior in
Goderich, though the Pirates
released him a week ago.
The Centenaires are on the
road to Lucan in the Morenz
Division tonight at 8:15
(Wednesday). They host the
North Middlesex Stars in
divisional play again here
Friday night at 8:30 and are
at Lambeth (hopefully)
before tucking into the
turkey, Sunday night for a
game with the Lancers that
gets started at 7:30.
