Rivals ready for another `dogfight'
LvWJ 11l!IS R1
1995-96 record: 23-12-3
Finish: Second
Playoffs: Seaforth finished
them with ease in five in first
round.
Coaching staff: George
Pratt; Bill Bourne and Jason
Bukala (London/Oakridge),
assistants.
Manager: Ken Freeman.
Gone: Head coach Scott
Bogart and his assistant Mark
Bannon. Leading scorer
Trevor Emms (23G, 31 A, 54
Pts.) is now with Port
Stanley. Bye-bye to over-
agers Steve Matthews,
Jeremy Jemec, Dave
Lindburg and Chad
Lambourn, also goaltenders
Knyvet Carson, now going to
university at Windsor, and
Brian Popp.
Newcomers: Goaltenders
Nathan Maudfley, 19, from
Western and Matthew
Faucett, 17, out of London.
Young forwards Greg
Henderson out of Ilderton,
Andrew Stratten ("a real go-
getter who can do the job")
from London and Josh
Appleman from Lucan.
What to look for in 96-97:
Biggest change is upstairs
with Freeman, who returns.to
Irish from a stint in junior B
that began after 93 season.
Lucan was division finalist in
five of six seasons from
1987 through 92. "Kenny"
was at the helm. he knows a
hockey player when he sees
one and does his homework.
Knows London. Pratt was the
head coach in Exeter.a couple
of seasons back, and assistant
Bourne was head honcho
with North Middlesex Stars.
The Irish won five and lost
two this pre -season. Mike
Robb (25-18-43) returns, and
knows where the net is.

1995-96 record: 14-19(5)-5
Finish: Fourth
Payoffs: Took eventual
OHA champs Exeter to six
games in first round.
Coach: Dean Schram, Dale
Timmermans and Dan
Gibson arc assistants.
Manager: Blake Smith (first
year).
The Skinny: A BIG team
with most veterans returning
and some talented newcom-
ers, including former Star
Jason Dunlop up front, back
from junior B in St. Marys.
The team's number one line
Chris. Downie (21,24-45),
Canada's population
Passing 30,000,000
The population of Canada
is probably now 30 -million
people says Statistics
Canada.
The next set of exact fig-
ures aren't available until
December but the July I
numbers showed the nation's
population was 29,963,631
and experts say around now
the 30 -millionth mark is
being, or has, been passed.
Canada's population simi-
larly passed 25,000,000 in
1982, 20 -million in 1966 and
10 -million in 1929.
Experts project Canada will
reach the 35 -million people
plateau around the year 2010.
Operation Impact
Canada ranked fifth among
industrialized nations for the
most fatalities based on the
number of registered vehi-
cles, according to "Operation
Impact" statistics from the
Ontario Provincial Police.
• 44 per cent of drivers
killed in motor vehicle colli-
sions have been drinking,
according to the most recent
data, 1993.
• speed is the primary factor
in 25 per cent of fatal crash-
es.
• 82 per ccnt of drinking
drivers who are fatally
injured have blood alcohol
levels above the Legal limit.
MORENZ
DIVISION
1996-97
Jamie Vowles (15-25-40) and
Josh Wilkins (15-14-29)
returns intact, as does the
defence, anchored by veter-
ans Jay Williamson, Bart
Dries, Todd McPherson,
Mike Stanlake. Goaltender
Aaron Lucas is gone but
Kevin Morton (GAA/3.99 )
is back, with his backup
either Jim Watson or Mike
Mansfield. Manager Smith
says he has some interesting
additions that played with
Port Stanley and Lambeth
last season. He is also big on
young forward Shawn
Battram. "We have a terrific
nucleus," says Smith, "and
are in the best shape we have
ever been in. Our defence is
strong. This is a crucial year."
This is Parkhill's fifth season
in the OHA's Junior "D"evel-
opment League. They have
money in the hank and the
experience and talent to turn
some heads this season.
CDdAllb ll 1 2? GEIA tN oL
1995-96 record: 30-4-4
Finish: First
Playoffs.: Took the Morenz
title last year and went on to
win the Ontario Hockey
Association championship.
Coaching: Dave Revington,
Jeff Dalrymple.
Manager: John Pryde
The season after: The
defending OHA champs lost
a lot of depth and experience
to ove, ragc rule that limits all
IDL and junior C teams to
twci 21-year+olds. Hawks
have opted for the hest pair -
Clinton's •answer td Bo,ti
Probert, talented and tough
forward Chris Kennedy (17-
21-38/165 PIM) and defence -
man Jason McBride (1-12-
13/109). Now 22 and ineligi-
ble is perennial all-star and
two-time conference scoring
champion Shayne Robinson
(18-13-51 ), among others.
Veteran goaltender Dave
Nahrgang (GAA/3.38) who
got the call repeatedly in the
clutch down the stretch in the
playoffs, is also gone and
doing other things. But
Darren Kints, who' was
Exeter's "main man"
between the pipes during the
regular season is still eligible
and had the best goals against
average in the conference -
2.83. Nate Burns (19-27-46)
also still knows where the net
is. Look for second -year
sniper Jason Rutledge to
come on. He scored a pile of
goals for Blyth's midgets a
couple of seasons back.
Repeat? Don't bet the mort-
gage. But Exeter had an
excellent midget team a cou-
ple of seasons back and for
the Hawks to remain domi-
nant they will now have to
step into the experienced
skates of those departed. But
"Rev" and Pryde have been
around and know what they
are doing. Expect some aces
from up their sleeves before
this season is over. Hawks
bombed St. George 8-1 in
their opener Sunday.
IRIAYIEaSS
1995-96 record: 14-19(1)-5
Finish: Fifth
Playoffs: Stayed in the race
with Parkhill until final week
but missed post -season play
for the first time in a long
while, after being ousted in
first round the year before,
after hack -to -back OHA
championships from 1992 to
94.
Coach: Jamie Rolph, assis-
tant Murray Elliott.
Manager: Brent Tinning.
Key returnees: Slick little
sniper Eric Staffen (18-35-
53) was third in division
scoring last season, and now
has a year's experience under
his belt. Much is also expect-
ed from overagers Todd
McCann (12-15-27) and
Jeremy Smith (6-21-27), who
are hack. Mark Mahon (15-5-
20) scores some big goals.
Second -year goaltender Scott
Vosper (GAA/3.96) returns,

minons and Mt. Brydges 10,
but the Bulldogs' powerplay
was more efficient - scoring
four times to Seaforth's none.
The visitors led 2,-0 after
the first period, hut the
Centcniares battled hack to
tie it at 3-3 after two.
Steve Mclnally, Jeff
Klages, Jason Henderson and
Tim Barton, scored for
Seaforth, outshot 40-30 on
the game.
The script was on another
skate in Fridays night's fair-
ly feisty affair - the
Centenaires were clearly the
better team in their home
opener against the Braves,
and scored four times on the
powerplay to Tavistock's
none.
Shaun Anstett scored twice
and had tongues wagging in
the stands a couple of other
times, •with bursts of speed
that became breakways.
Jeff Volland, Tim Barton,
Brett Hulley and. J.C. Kirk
added single goals for the
Cents, who lcd 2-1 after the
first period and 5-2 after the
second and outshot Tavi
(with released former
Mitchell Hawks' goaltcnder
Darcy Ballantyne between
the pipes) 43-31 overall.
Scott Wood went all the
way in net for Seaforth in
both games.

comer Troy Chessell from
Stratford.
Newcomers to watch:
Forward Martin Van Den
Hoven and defenceman Nick
Seebach from Mitchell
midgets. Rookie Nick Hishon
( son of Dan) from Stratford.
Defenceman Karl Terpstra
from Monkton.
Gone: Jeff Lewis (17-30-47)
is missing in action. Veteran
goaltender Darcy Ballantyne
was released to Tavistock.
Steady defenceman Jim
Crowley broke an ankle.
Head coach Jack Chaffe (five
years) retired upstairs to the
executive.
Looking good: Forward
Shawne McLeod, who was
with the team last season but
injured his ankle early.
Prognosis: Three-quarters of
this Learn is Mitchell or
Monkton talent. The Hawks
won their most recent OHA
titles by keeping the same
kind of local crew together
until it matured. This is a
very young team. Manager
Tinning would like to see
some more consistency in
goaltending and positional
play from the squad. He
harkens back to a weekend in
early January last when his
Hawks beat always -tough
Lucan 1-0 on one night, but
turned around and got clob-
bered by lowly St. George
the next. "We've got to come
to play every night," Tinning
says, "and, not get up for just
Seaforth, Lucan and Exeter."

1995-96 record: 20-17(5)-5
Finish: Third
Playoffs: Put out Lucan in
five then took Exeter to seven
games in Morenz final.
Coaching: Dave Murray, Jim
Campbell, Dave Akey assis-
tant.
Manager: Gregor Campbell.
Outlook: Team profiled in
last week's Expositor. Since
then last season's Morenz
scoring champion Steve
Mclnally (25-33-58) is back
on a card. Other interesting
irons are still in the fire. If
goalie Wood (GAA/3.34)
improves as much this year
as he did last (Conference all-
star), he can be as good as
"Duskocy the Great", who
was as good a goalie as they
come at this level a couple of
season's back for the
Centenaires. You won't find
a quicker team in either con-
ference. If the Cents take it
one game at a time and stay
focussed they have the horses
to win it all.
