Minor hockey registration
in Seaforth is'up by seven
players this year over last,
but down by one team.
There are about 220 little
pucksters registered but there
is no second bantam team in
town this year, says the presi-
dent of the Seaforth &
District Minor Hockey
Association, Graham Nesbitt.
Scheduling is more of a
mish-mash for the nine
Seaforth travelling teams,
who start their seasons next
week, for 1996-97 because of
restructuring at the minor
level of the sport, for instance
the coming of triple A hock-
ey to Huron -Perth.
OCCO
SOCCER
Nesbitt says the local minor
hockey association hopes
scheduling will become less
of a headache next season
when Seaforth switches to
the Shamrock League, along
with Mitchell.
But Seaforth's Stars will
only play exhibitions against
Shamrock teams this year to
flush out their schedules.
Officially Seaforth com-
petes in both the north and
south divisions of the
Western Ontario Athletic
Association (WOAA) this
year, depending on which
centres ice teams at the vari-
ous levels.

SOUTH IN SHAMBLES
Only Mitchell, Seaforth and
Wingham remain in the
south. Clinton is gone and
Goderich appears in trouble
and is now in the north.
Nesbitt says minor hockey
registration in Goderich is
down by about 75 players
this year, so at some levels
Goderich will only ice sec-
ond teams in the north.
Other centres in the north-
ern stooping of WOAA
include Walkerton, Hanover,
Kincardine, Durham, Port
Elgin, Mt. Forest and Minto
Township.
Next season in the
Shamrock League, Seaforth
will be regularly competing
with teams from such towns
as Exeter, Parkhill, St. Marys,
Lucan, Dorchester, Strathroy
and Mitchell.
THECOACHES
The coaches of the various
travelling teams for Seaforth
minor hockey this season are
as follows: midget, Jason
Papple; bantam, Tom Turner;
peewee I, Brent Van Den
Akker, Paul McLlwain and
Kalen Carroll; peewee II,
Scott Jervis; atom I, Brian
O'Reilly; atom II, TBA;
novice 1, Trevor Fortune;
novice Ii, Ron Kirkconnell;
tyke, Bruce Williams.
'Mac' a 'Jack
The New York Islanders
sent Seaforth's Dave
McLlwain to the Cleveland
Lumberjacks once again last
Wednesday.
McLlwain was an all-star
and leading the Lumberjacks
of the International Hockey
League in scoring until late
last season, when the
National Hockey League's
Ottawa Senators, who then
owned his rights, traded him
to the Pittsburgh Penguins
before the playoffs.
The Pens traded him to the
Islanders once again during
the off-season. Despite fast
week's demotion, the Isles
still own his rights.
He was not picked up by
any other team in Monday's
NHL waiver draft.
McElwain, 29, is an NHL
veteran. He has been a for-
ward with the Penguins and
islanders on two occasions,
and also played with the
Winnipeg Jets, Toronto
Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres
and Ottawa Senators since
first being selected by the
Pens in the 1986 NHL entry
draft.
Rangers get Boyd back
The NHL's Edmonton
Oilers have sent Seaforth's
Boyd Devereaux hack to the
major junior Kitchener
Rangers for the upcoming
hockey season.
Boyd was at the Oilers pre-
season camp after being
drafted sixth overall in this
summer's NHL entry draft.
He scored his first goal of
the season for the Rangers on
the powerplay 2:07 into the
first period of Sunday's 6-2
loss to the London Knights at
Kitchener.
At last report, Rem Murray,
of the Dublin -area, was still
with the Oilers. He played for
Cape Breton last year.
Ball fans near top in big pool
A group of Seaforth major
league baseball fans has their
team near the top in the rotis-
serie baseball pool run for the
past several summers by The
London Free Press.
The team is made up of
Larry Dolmagc, Marc
Robinet and Graham Nesbitt.
Ludwig, Price win .tennis title
and their wives. As of the last
weekly listings, this team
was in seventh -place overall
in this large rotisserie pool
with 5,213 points. The lead-
ing team was only 321 points
Netter, the last time totals
were officially tallied.
Sean Ludwig and Carly
Price of Seaforth District
High School won the mixed -
doubles title at last
Wednesday's Huron -Perth
Conference final at Stratford,
by beating a twosome from
Wingham's F.E. Madill.
They won in straight sets,
by scores of 7-5 and 6-2.
In women's doubles, Cheryl
Thompson and Cara Spittal
were Huron -Perth finalists.
Both teams qualified for the
WOSSA tennis tournament
today (Wednesday) in
Tillsonburg.
Derek Akey and Ian
McMillan represented the
Golden Bears fn men's sin-
gles in Stratford last
Wednesday, while Starla
Wick and Cheryl Workman
did likewise in woinen's sin-
gles.
in women's doubles it was
Christa Bennett and Carali
McCall for Seaforth and
SDHS had two men's teams:
Brent Hulley and Adam
Lconhardt, and Nick
Longstaff and Brett Moffett.
ents split
The Mt. Bry(Jges Bulldogs
lit the red lamp four times or,
powerplays, which was the
difference, on their way to a
6-4 win over the Centenaires
at Seaforth Sunday night.
The loss, in the wake of a
7-3 victory over the
Tavistock Braves in their
home opener at Seaforth
Friday, gave the Centenaires
a split on their first weekend
of this Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D"evel-
opment League season.
They make it three -in -a -row
on home ice when they host
the Port Stanley Lakers this
Friday night, before their
next game, and first on the
road. at Lucan a week from
tonight. Wednesday.
The Bulldogs were full
measure for the win Sunday,
although it went down to the
wirc. They nailed it officially
with an empty -net goal with
1:07 left in the game.
Mt. Brydgcs is being touted
as maybe the team to beat in
the other division of the same
West conference the Cents
play in.
There weren't a lot of
penalties in Sunday's game,
