Radiation treatments begin in October

which were already depleted
due to the chemotherapy
treatments. With a transfu-
sion, Dustin's platelet counts
were expected to go up, but
they did not. "There was bac-
teria eating his platelets, his
whole blood cells," Mik said.
After treating Dustin with a
number of antibiotics, which
were having no effects, the
medical team called in a doc-
tor who is an in infectious dis-
ease consultant, who helped
get the flu under control.
While Dustin continues to
undergo chemotherapy treat-
ments, which are adminis-
tered through a port -a -cath set
in his chest, because his veins
are too small to access, the
family is also preparing to
start him on 25 days of radia-
tion treatments beginning in
October, which will he
administered along with the
chemotherapy.
Last week, a mask was
made of Dustin's head, and
from that mask a bust will be
.made, and a hole will be cut
out for the area to be radiated.
"They are going to do half his
head," Angie explained, as
the cancer spread from the
lump on the side of his fore-
head, down to his lymph
nodes.
The couple has been
warned that the side effects
from the radiation could be
severe. "There will he slower
bone growth on that side of
his head. and possible teeth
and eyesight loss," Angie
said. There is a drug in use in
the United States that can
help save tissue damaged by
radiation treatments, and doc-
tors in London are making a
hid to have the drug used for
Dustin's case, as Angie noted
that as it saves tissue, it could
save his cycsight and teeth.
Throughout the treatments,
Dustin is having his ups and
downs, spending some days
on the couch when he is feel-
ing sick, or being up and
about like any three-year-old
during his good spells.
"Everything changes every
day, from him wanting to do
stuff every day, to not wanti-
ng to do anything," Mik said.
Dustin's strength in battling
the cancer is helping the fam-
ily to cope. "He keeps us
going," his mother stated.
"We always used to joke
when he was young that noth-
ing could stop him. That's
what keeps us going; nothing
is going to stop him."
Both Mik and Angie have
temporarily givenup their
jobs. Mik with Standard
Products in Stratford, and
Angie with - , Community
Living Central Huron out of
Goderich. Mik lost his father
to cancer five years ago, and
he noted that as he was work-
ing at the time, "I was not
able to spend as much time
with him as 1 should have."
"We have taken this on as
our job for the next year,"
said Angie, and Mik added
that if he were to return to
work, and something were to
happen to Dustin. .he would
not he able to cope. "We
couldn't do it. Our jobs arc
there for us when we return,"
added Angie.
With the loss of both jobs,
and still facing many months
of treatmcnts, the couple is
very appreciative of the sup-
port they have received from
family, friends and the com-
munity as a whole. "People
ask us how we are doing. I
think that is what enables us
to get through it," Angic said,
noting they are constantly
receiving phone calls and
cards. "We know we are not
alone," Mik stated.
