The Huron Expositor, 1996-09-25, Page 611-THO HURON EXPOSITOR, INnittanshior 20, 1fM* Cents ready and raring to roll An for one and one for all! That spirit sometimes seemed lacking on last sea- son's edition Of the neverthe- less relatively -successful edi- tion of the Seaforth Centenaires, according to co- head coach Jim Campbell. But not this time around, on pre -season form. "Ask me in February," says Campbell, "hut so far the squad has shown a grittier style. 'They hack each other up and are not afraid to go into a corner with their backs turned. We lacked that last year." The Centenaires begin their twenty-third Ontario Hockey Association season with two Junior "D"evelopment League games on home ice with two out -of -division games this weekend. Tavistock is in town Friday night and the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs Sunday. Thc puck drops both evenings at 8:30. -"So far we seem to have the right mix of kids and older players." Campbell says. "They hack each other up and arc entertaining. I am extremely happy with the way the young kids have come along in pre -season. Being a veteran now doesn't automatically mean you make the club." • His returning cohort behind the bench, Dave Murray, agrees. Both are in their sec- ond season, as is assistant coach Dave Akey. "We have a good mix with a lot of local players and they all get. along well," Murray says. "I hope it continues. "It's up to a couple of veter- ans whether they want to be a part of it.* We hope to sec them hack. We have a high level of commitment and 1 hope it continues for the rest of the season and well into the playoffs." • NO CAKE -WALKS - "We play in the toughest division in by far the tough- est conference," Murray adds. "There won't he too many cake -walks. They have to he ready to play each and every night. " It is a hit -of a• plus starting our camp so early but now the players are chomping at the hit to get on with the sea- son.'" Thc Cents finished with the fourth -hest record ion their history in 1995-96. They won 20 games. lost 17 (three in overtime, which counts for a point in the standings like a tie) and tied one, but still fin- ished in third place - 18 points to the rear of the Exeter Hawks Who only dropped four decisions in their 38 starts and went on to win the OHA championship. But after ousting second- place Lucan in a decisively short and sweet first round, the Ccntenaires took those C4TH flavour on NHL's Oilers in pre -season Thc Edmonton Oilers are mining a distinct vein of hockey talent that was nur- tured in the Scaforth area as they prepare for the upcom- ing National Hockey League season. "Rein" Murray of the Dublin arca fired a goal and an assist in the Oilers 3-1 exhibition win over the Phoenix Coyotes (formerly Winnipeg Jets) on Saturday night. In the Oilers' first pre- season game. the weekend before. Boyd Devereaux of Seaforth recorded an assist. Both started their hockey careers by playing minor then junior in Scaforth, as did Mike Watt of Egmondvillc, who is also Oilers' "proper- ty" hut can't participate in an N111. team's training camp without becoming ineligible for the scam he currently plays for - the Michigan State University Spartans. He was drafted sixth overall in the first round by Edmonton in this summer's NHI. cntry draft. same Hawks to a seventh and deciding game in the Morenz Division final, and beat them three times in eight days, before going down for the count with a 4-1 loss. THE LEAGUE The OHA Junior "D"evel- opment League is arranged the same way as last time 'round this season. Seaforth plays five games against each of their four divisional rivals - Exeter, Lucan, North Middlesex (Parkhill) and Mitchell. The Cents play two games, home -and -home, with each of the five teams in the other division of their confer- ence - Thamesford, Mt. Brydges, Port Stanley, Lambeth and Belmont - and they also play each of the eight teams in the other con- ference once. The Cents also recently affiliated with the junior B Stratford Cullitons and man- ager Gregor Campbell, who is hack for his seventh sea- son, feels this will he a plus for both Seaforth's junior and minor systems. Doug Anstett 47, returns for his second season as assistant general manager, and Pete Martene is the new President of Seaforth's junior hockey club. He replaces Wayne Wiggins, who remains with the executive. Kevin Acs of Lucan is the Cents' level i11 trainer, and Trent Ward remains the team's equipment manager.
