Walk to increase awareness about AIDS BY DAViD EMILIE SSP News Staff Russell Carson wants to get the message out that HIV is a very real disease which is riot limiting -its effects to' the city, and he hopes this message will he spread during the . fourth annual Walk for AIDS. Carson, 34. is a member of the Huron County UIV/AIDS Network, who will he hosting the Sept. 29. fundraising and .. awareness raising walk in Goderich. HIV positive for 14 years, Carson has -spent time recent- ly raising awareness about HIV and AiDS with local . youths and young adults He noted that in their discus- sions, he has found there is not a "grey area" regarding the disease and its effects - with the local youths, as they either fully support safe .sex and education, or, on the other hand, feel it cannot affect them.. . On this latter side of the -dis- cussion, Carson said that youths are aware of the dis- ease, hut feel that they don't need to he educated as they feel, he said, that. "it -doesn't happen here." He added that he has heard from some that. "it is .something that happens in the city. it happens to other people, it doesn't happen here." With numerous awareness campaigns • re yarding HIV/AIDS' and safe sesuaf practices to avoid -contracting the illness, Carson has. also received a response he found surprising when, he spoke to local youths regarding safe sex and the use at. condoms. "He said. Real men don't use condoms.' That was an '11i - year -old." Carson stated. ' In about half of the youths and young adults' he speaks with, -he 'continued. there is the feeling that. the contract- ing f HIV cannot happen in Hum County. and that. "Ther can -do anything they want. as long as the gill. is on the pill. They can't .he any safer than that." Awareness is also one pur- pose of the Walk for ,ADS. is Carson noted that if they can get some of the "cool kids". out and walking for the cause., then .other students mirht wonder. "if the cool kids know about it, why don't we''" He• added that 'there were a few students who par- ticipated in. last year'; walk. - and, "they really enjoyed it." Funds raised during the walk go towards helping the Huron County HiV/A\iDS Network continue with their work. and Carson said •that last year. the walk raised its highest amount to date. .$5.700. Interest in the walk also continues to grow. he said. "Each year. interest is a little higher. with more people out... The walk will depart from Robertson Memorial Public School in Goderich on Sunday.
