4-H activities in full swing for 'Home Improvers'
The Home Improvers met
at Vanden Hoven's on
September 9 at 7 p.m. The
roll call was give a phone
number or a piece of infor-
mation that should be listed
near the phone in case of an
emergency. Then members
practiced giving directions to
their home. The next meeting
will be on September 16. The
cover ideas were presented
and Melissa Van Bakel's was
the winner.
Helen Van Bakel Icad the
discussion for the meeting on
personal safety. The impor-
tance of looking after keys
was stressed. After dis-
cussing safety in the home
fire prevention and safety fol-
lowed. Members were asked
about escape plans for their
homes. The next topic was
about being street safe.
Members shared stories to

annual battery blitz was
"very successful", with about
1,300 collected for recycling. ,
In addition, 4-H reports 10
teams competed in its "Go
For The Gold" competition at
Clinton on Aug. 21, with
"Sheep 1" the winners, who
will represent Huron at the
western region competition

Junior leader Mike Van
Bakel did a presentation on
first aid kits. He showed what
a kit might have in it and
explained its use. Mike
explained the importance of
plastic gloves as a precaution
for HIV contact. Members
can make their own kit by
following the guidelines in
the members manual.
Mary Kreutzwiser showed
her first aid kit. It included a
respirator to use to give
mouth to mouth, and by
using it there would not be
any direct contact. Melissa
Van Bakel presented the
items in her babysitting kit.
Members were encouraged to
take a course to give confi-
dence if just starting to
babysit.
The meeting adjourned
with a snack.
SEAFORTH 1 STARTS

The first meeting of the
new project, On Your Own,
was held at Vanden Hoven's
on August 26 at 1 p.m. Gerda
went over the requirements

left for Holland Monday as
members of Canada's tug-of-
war team for the World
Outdoor Championships at
Slagharen.
Twenty-one countries are
tugging.

Joe Vermunt of Zurich.

Rob Vanden Hoven, a
junior leader, did a mix and
match game to review the
roles of each executive posi-
tion. The election of officers
was held. The results arc:

Reporter, Crista Vanden
Hoven.
The leaders for the project
are Mary Kreutzwiser, Helen
Van Bakel and Garda Vanden

Vanden Hoven.
Rob then reviewed the steps
in making a motion and
members filled in a quiz.
Gerda reviewed the awards
program in Huron and
showed the new 24 project
picture. Then it was onto sur-
vival on the home front as
various maintenance topics
were covered, such as fuses
and breakers, changing a

taps.

could remember what they

The next topic was clogged
drains. Members were
encouraged to use environ-
mentally friendly cleaners in
their homes. Every year
households dump up to 40
liters of dangerous goods
down the drain.
After a snack members
decided on a name for the
project. We will be the Home
Improvers.
JUDGING WINNERS AT
WESTERN FAIR
Huron County 4-H mem-
bers did well at the Western
Fair Pioneer 4-H Evaluation
Extravaganza held Saturday,
Sept 14..Junior winners were
first Crystal Salm, Goderich
and third was Melissa Van
Bakel, Seaforth., Crista
Vanden Hoven was first in
the intermediate division.
Crystal and Crista along with
Mark Salm, Goderich also
placed second in the team
division. Members judged a
variety of classes from first
aid kits to photographs to
livestock. They gave reasorm
and answered a quiz. After%
delicious meal at the Top of
the Fair, the awards were pre-
sented to the winners.
The event is put on by the
peer mentors and the stu-
dents' council.
Sept. 27.: Commencement
will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the
gym.
Oct. 4: Students will attend
the Fall Fair.
Oct. 15: Hepatitis B vacci-
nations are offered to all but
Grade 9 students.
Grade 9 Orientation Day on
Sept. 13 included guest
speakers from Canada
Employment, Safe Homes,
Huron Addiction Centre, and
area nurse Diane Dawson.
The Students' Council
offered a hot dog lunch while
grade 9 investigated the sev-
eral extracurricular activities
offered at SDHS. Each club
presented a display in the
gym hoping to include new
students. 1996-1997 offers a
variety of extracurricular
choices: the Art Club, athlet-
ics,,bears' booster club, the
den (retail), the choir, com-
puter lab roctors, debating
team, a and film club,
geograp y challenge team,
intramurals, math contests,
outers club, school reach,
yearbook team, peer mentor-
ing and the school newspa-
per, The Bear Paw.
Students' Council held a
pep rally and dance on
Wednesday, Sept. 11 featur-
ing Pinx Productions. They
had three big screens and
played music videos and
videos of last year's student
life. All the excitement of the
pep rally motivated a great
number of students to attend
the dance from 7 p.m. to 11

GOLF TEAM: This year
we have 21 golfers trying out
for the four positions on the
team. They must play a round
of 18 holes at the Seaforth
Golf Course and the best 4
scores will be determined:

the Huron -Perth Tournament
on Sept. 19 at the Goderich
Sunset course. Of the 21 try-
ing out for the team - all are
boys! We need some interest-
ed girl golfers.
