WELCOME TO HIGH SCHOOL! - SDHS held its welcom-
ing Initiation Day on Friday at the school for new Grade 9
students, who were put through a variety of activities.
Above, Jen DelVecchio has her face buried in a bowl of
spaghetti searching for a golf ball. Behind her, Derek Akey
emerged from his bowl with the golf ball in his mouth. In the
photo at right, students had to dunk their faces in water,
then crawl to a plastic pool full of flour and miniature
marshmallows and try to pick up a marshmallow in their
mouth. Covered with flour at right is Ryan Willis.
Fire chiefs meet about coordinator
BY NELLIE EVANS

The Huron County Fire
Chiefs Association will pro-
pose an annual salary for the
mutual aid fire co-ordinator
position at a meeting tonight
(September 18) in Clinton.
Association chairman
Robert Pertschy of Crediton
said the association is look-
ing for a committment from
the municipalities "to get a
co-ordinator appointed and
hack in place."
Huron. County has been
Without a mutual aid fire co-
ordinator since May when
Deart Reid of Clinton
resigned.
At issue has been ,the lack
of balance between the
salary offered " by Huron
County Council in March
1996 ($1,700 annually) and
the person's responsibilities.
In January 1996, the chiefs
association valued the job at
$5,000 with $1,000 being
paid tohis assistant. (The
association also recommend-
ed that $3,100 be paid to the
Huron County Mutual Aid
Association, a separate enti-
ty.)
Also at issue was the way
the fire co-ordinator was
paid. The chiefs association
suggested a 'flat fee per
municipality while others
(Zurich, Hay Township and
Grey Township) believe a
county levy based on proper-
ty assessment is the answer.
Zurich councillors didn't
offer any solutions , to the
task of filling the vacancy
last week as they waded
through a stack of back-
ground information sent by

The package includes facts
about funding sources; rate
of pay and duties and respon-

Zurich Councillor Brad
Clausius was the only one to
comment, saying, "They're
only paying him $1,700. It's
no wonder he chucked it
back to them."
Among the material was a
letter listing duties by" former
co-ordinator Dean Reid of
Clinton. He said the job is
worth more than $5,000
annually.
Stephen Township Council
recently passed a resolution
giving the chiefs of the
Stephen and Dashwood fire
departments "discretionary
authority" to respond to
mutual aid requests in the
absence of a county fire co-
ordinator.
":..and that such responses
are recognized to be under
the direction and authority of
the Stephen Township
Council, and further that the
chief will provide township
council with appropriate
notice of any response to
mutual aid requests," reads a
portion of the motion.
