Two strikes jolted the St.
Columban men's soccer team
out of a familiar second -half
slumber. Seemingly back on
their heels, Brian Melady
suddenly stung back with his
second goal of the game,
decisively heading home
Wayne Ryan's free kick
about five minutes later as
the local lads finished in finer
form to win their first
Western Ontario Soccer
Association Second Division
Cup in 20 years with a 3-2
triumph over the German
Canadians at the London
Portuguese field last
Thursday night.
St. Columban's last men's
Cup win was in the London
& District Soccer
Association's First Division
about 15 years ago, in the
early (980s.
They beat five teams in this
year's annual sudden -death
Cup competition, inter-
spersed since spring amongst
their regular season's sched-
ule, three of them by
shutouts. Keeper Jason Dietz
allowed but four goals in the
five games.
And he couldn't be faulted
for giving up the equalizer in
the tricky fading light at the
London field in the final last
week.
Melady's first goal came on
another header on a ball from
Mike Smale, who spent much
of the night thinking defence,
a scant foot away and no fur-
ther from the German
Canadian's feisty and danger-
ous black striker. It was a
tremendous job of marking.
The goal was a strange,
slow -bounding blooper. But
it counted.
St. Columban took a 2-0
lead at the half when Sean
Melady more decisively fin-
ished
a give -and -go from
John Jordan. And it looked
like celebrations were a lock.
NOT SO FAST
The German Canadians
showed spunkcoming back,
getting their first soon in the
second half. St. Columban
stopped running and all of a
sudden Dietz had his hands
full. A solid blast from a fair
distance tied the score at 2 -
up, and nobody in the stands
had any doubt which team
had the momentum. They
weren't wearing green.
The ball was rarely out of
the St. Columban end.
Melady's sudden winner on
one of about only two St.
Columban forays up the•
field, about five minutes later
and 10 minutes from time,
changed the momentum for
good.
The German Canadians'
goalkeeper was soon red -
carded by the referee, as was
another player, and they were
forced to finish the game
with only nine on the field. •
St. Columban stayed Id
their face but didn't go over-
board, and the Cup was thus
theirs.
"Summer Fun" loses less
The recreation depart-
ment's summer fun program
in Seaforth lost money again
this year, but far less than last
summer.
It finished with a deficit of
$935.49, according to figures
presented to council by recre-
ation director Marty Bedard,
compared to the 1995 figure
of $7,674 to the red.
Bedard told council he felt
it woutz bot'4'difficult to
reduce any further", but still
ease mended running sum-
mer fun again next year, sug-
gesting the number of trips
perhaps be decreased and
registration fees increased
slightly.
Wages cost $4,069.52 this
year compared to $9,358 last
year, accounting for much of
deficit improvement. Staff
was halved from six to three,.
and moving from the agricul-
ture building to the arena
saved $685 in rental fees,
according to the rec direc-
tor's figures.

It was a terrific entertain-
ment.
KEEN ON REVENGE
It seems St. Columban's
habit to go flat in the second
half this season. Melady
(Brian)thinks he has an
explanation for the recur-
rence in the final. The
German Canadians beat St.
Columban 3-1 a couple of
weeks ago in league play.
Melady said his mates still
had this stuck in their craw
and perhaps were toointense
before taking to the field for
the first half, running them-
selves out.
St. Columban is still in sec-
ond place in the Second
Division Central table, two
points to the rear of Scottish.
But the locals have a game in
hand ontheothers contend-
ing to •rise to the First
Division, so have their des-
tiny in their own feet.
It won't be any can of corn.
They have two games left at
home, and two on the road
back-to-back in London next
weekend. One of these is a
re-sked against Greek
Olympics, that Saturday fol-
lowed by Sunday's trip to the
field of London Portuguese.
St. Columban's next game
is at home against Maltese
this Saturday at 3 p.m.
There are only seven points
now separating first to sev-
enth in the division stand-
ings.
St. Columban beat
Strathroy Portuguese,
Scottish, the Olympics,
London Portuguese and the
German Canadians on the
road to this season's Cup
win. There were 30 teams
originally in the running. The
locals last won the Second
Division Cup in 1976.

FIRST GOAL! It came from
this slow, looping header.
BETTER LEGS - The locals
were all fired up. Sean
Melady flies through the air.
SECOND GOAL - The ball and Sean Melady were both
blurs just before the lights went on and St: Columban went
up 2-0 at the half.
KEEPER GETS TO TOUCH CUP FIRST - Goaltender
Jason Dietz was extremely stingy in the five Cup games
this season, and accepted the trophy on behalf of his team-
mates.
