Store owners meet with LACAC
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL
Expositor Staff
The Local Architectural
Conservation Advisory
Committee(LACAC)
smoothed out differences
with the owners of a local
business they had advised
legal action against the
month before, when the two
sides got together at
Seaforth's Town Hall on
Aug. 20.
Chair Walter Armes, who
was not at the controversial
meeting July 16, suggested
the options be reviewed and
the ones eliminated that are
definitely not acceptable,
according to the minutes.
These included taking legal
action and requiring the
woodwork to be removed and
the storefront returned to its
previous state" before
varathane was applied,
among other things.
Gerry Ryan, who owns the
hair styling business along
with his wife Karen, said "it
was customers who suggest-
ed leaving the wood in its
natural state and not having it
painted... when an air condi-
tioner was being installed,
the wood supporting it was
rotted and had to be removed
and this led to the entire front
of the store being updated."
The minutes state when
Ryan walked up Main Street
to look at other store fronts
he "noticed that there were a
few other stores with
varathaned tongue and
groove wood on their fronts.
The Ryans naturally assumed
that this must be acceptable
for the downtown and pro-
ceeded to do the work."
The following are further
verbatim portions of the
meeting's minutes:
MEETING MINUTES
"Coun. (Michael) Hak stat-
ed he feels the natural wood
is acceptable since there is
not that much wood to begin
with, however, he would like
the Ryans to consider using a
painted border in green or
grcy to blend with the
awning or the sign.
"The Ryans explained the
green in the sign and awning
are not exact matches and
they hesitate to add a third
shade of green...
"Kathy Pletsch indicated
the store front is nice, but it is
new looking and does not
really `go' with the heritage
district.
" Chair Armes stated the
wood is new and hasn't had a
chance to age yet...
"The Ryans will try to find
a treatment for the exterior
wood that will tie together
the sign, awning and store-
front, which may include
paint and/or a clear finish.
Prior to making their final
decision they will consult
with LACAC again."
The conservation advisory
committee Chair then asked
the Ryans for suggestions
that would prevent this type
of incident in future.
OWNERS SUGGEST
"Ryan stated that when
something is broken at home
they just fix it and that is
kind of how the work on the
storefront came about and
they didn't really realize they
were doing something
wrong," the LACAC minutes
continue:
"He found the application
forms cumbersome and not
applicable to their situations,
particularly the reference to
estimated costs for work and
the request for two estimates
since he was doing the work
himself. They wanted to get
the work done in time for
'Moonlight Madness' and
were upset it might take as
long as 90 days for Council's
approval...
"Karen Ryan suggested it
might be helpful to have
someone from LACAC visit
in store or property owners
and explain in person what
some of the requirements are
with designated properties
and help them filling out the
application..."
"Gerry Ryan suggested per-
haps one way of getting peo-
ple to complete the applica-
tion process and consult with
the committee would be to
offer new business owners a
one-time matching forgivable
loan for making improve-
ments to their storefront. The
loan could he for a very small
amount ($250), but the pay-
back to the business person
and the town would he
immeasurable...
"Chair Armes thanked the
Ryans for coming.:.and for
providing suggestions for
improving LACAC relations
with the public," minutes of
the that portion of the meet-
ing conclude.
11,
Trying to make sense of licence (or license?)
Dear Editor:
I have heard of no change
in the spelling of "licence" -
so far as I know, we are still
. following in this country the
English spelling. Why should
we switch to "Americanese"?
.Over the weekend I was
catching up on the local news
and in a front-page headline I
was confronted by "Local
license," etc. If you tell me
that -you are using the
spelling in your press author-
ity. I can say only that some
subversive faction is hard at
work to undermine the
English language.
Take a look at your Driver's
Licence! On top of that, ref-
erence is made in this item to
the "Liquor License Board of
Ontario." What do you think
LCBO stands for? - Liquor
Control Board of Ontario.

(Editor's note: As for the
word in question which
appears in The Canadian
Press (CP) Caps and Spelling
guide for words often mis-
spelled; "licence" is listed as
a noun and "license" is
defined as a verb. So the
aforementioned use of
"license" was incorrect.
The CP Caps and Spelling
guide was originally printed
in 1965 in Canada and is
regularly updated.
As for the Liquor "License"
Board of Ontario, the only
thing that is incorrect about
that title is the spelling of
"licence." The LCBO
(Liquor Control Board of
Ontario) and .the LLBO
(Liquor Licence Board of
Ontario) are two separate
entities operating under the
Government of Ontario. -
The LLBO is responsible
for issuing liquor licences
and supervising establish-
ments like bars and restau-
rants that serve alcohol.
The LCBO operates retail
liquor stores but also issues
liquor licences from the
LLBO for such Things as
weddings, sporting events
and other happenings where
liquor is served.
If you want to confirm the
existence of the Liquor
Licence Board of Ontario,
you can contact them at 55
Lake Shore Blvd. E., Toronto,
ON, M5E 1A4).
