Cuts shock historical and conservation organizations
Fourteen historical and -con-
servation organizations last
week got the exact figures for
major cuts announced previ-
ously by the Ontario govern-
ment.
"Shocked" was the com-
mon response.
The cuts came directly from
last spring's 40 per cent cut
to the $L47 -million provin-
cial heritage organizations
program, according to a
report in The Globe and
Mail.
"We looked at three main
areas in the organizations:
membership support, pro-
grams and services and finan-
cial accountability. and sta-

Dog classes starting in fall
The Happy Citizens Club
would like to invite all
seniors to its first meeting of
the new season. This will be
a potluck dinner beginning at
noon at the Seaforth Legion.
Euchre will he played follow-
ing dinner.
The Seaforth Recreation
Department will host dog
obedience classes again this
fall, beginning Oct.l. There
'will be beginner and level 2
classes. Other fall programs
to watch for will be wood
refinishing, volleyball and
basketball.
Registration for fall and
winter programs (hockey,
ringette,figure skating,
hroomball, curling, children's
power skating, and much
more) is tonight and tomor-
row , Sept. 4 and 5, at the
Seaforth and District
Community Centres from 7
to 9 p.m.. Most groups have
late fees it is registration is
recommended on these two
nights.
The rcc department is host-
ing power skating for chil-
dren ages 7 to 16 years, from
Monday, Sept. 16 to
Thursday, Sept: 26. It will
total ofeight, one- hour ice
times . Don't forget the
hockey skills development
camp starting Sunday,
September 15. The annual
Blyth favorites
Perennial favorites "Charlie
Farquharson" (a.k:a' Don
Harron) and Catharine
McKinnon return for their
fifth appearance at the Blyth
Festival later this month, Sat.
Sept. 28.
Prior to the comedy and
music at 8 p.m., according to'
a press release. an "enticing
dinner" will he held in the
lower hall 'at 6. p.m., which
includes a "unique" fashion
show called The Artful
Dresser put together by the
'Blyth Festival Art Gallery
Committee.

next season's playbill
Stratford Festival artistic
director Richard Monette has
announced next season's
playbill,
It consists of .12 produc-
tions, at the festival's three
venues, starting June 2, 1997
with the Lerner and Lowe
musical Camelot, the musical
theatre debut of Monette as a
director.
Shakespeare's The Taming
of the Shrew, Romeo and
Juliet, Richard 111 and
Coriolanus are on the sched-
ule, as are Arthur Miller's
Death of Salesman, Little
Women, adapted from Louisa
May Alcott's. children's
novel, Sean O'Casey's Juno
and the Paycock, Dan
Needles' Wingfield Unbound,
Oedipus Rex by Sophocles,

year. The groups affected
range from the Architectural
Conservancy of Ontario to
the Ontario Museum
Association to the
Multicultural History Society
of Ontario.
Celebrating women's history
The goal of "Women's
History Month", this
October, according to a
recent press release from the
federal government, is "to
write women back into
Canadian history.
The cultural legacy of
women in the arts is next
month's theme.
"Historically, few women
could successfully combine
motherhood and an artistic
career," continues the Status
of Women Canada statement.
The month "serves to high-
light women's contributions
that have been too often over-
looked in our country's histo -
