Farmer's Almanac
publishes 205th
edition next week
The oldest continually pub-
lished periodical in North
America, the Old Farmer's
Almanac, publishes its 205th
edition next Tuesday.
In 1997 it predicts, among
other things, the military look
will catch attention", tea and
take-out will continue to take
over food trends, bamboo
furniture is back, and tin
Cracker Jack toys and alu-
minum desks from the 1920s
will be next year's "hot col-
lectibles."
As of Sept. 10, the
Canadian edition with its
familiar yellow cover and
nail hole in the corner, vyill
go on sale across the country.
About 4.5 -million copies are
to be distributed across North
America.

200 -metre breast stroke, at
the junior nationals at
Etobicokc the second week-
end of August. The I5 -year
old swims for the Huron
Hurricanes Aquatic Club.
Her time was 2:46.94, in a
field made up of 14 to 20 -
year -olds.
The Hurricanes have try-
outs this week, starting

CWL holds
September
meeting
St. Columban

The September meeting of
the St. Columban Catholic
Women's League was held
last Tuesday in the rectory
meeting room. Anne Marie
Maloney, president, opened
the meeting with prayer.
Sister Rita Coyne gave a
reading and reflection on
prayer. Minutes of the June
meeting were given by Joan
Murray and approved.
Funeral lunches were served
at services for Peter Van
Drunen, Francis Hicknell and
Herman Klaver. In the corre-
spondence thank yous were
received and an invitation
from the Seaforth St. James
CWL to celebrate it's 75th
anniversary on September 25.
There will be a dinner at the
Seaforth Legion at 6:30 p.m.,
a guest speaker and a short
program. An upcoming
event is Cemetery Sunday
Sept. 8 with Mass at 11 a.m.
(weather permitting). After
the ladies will serve coffee,
juice and donuts.
The annual "Harvest
Dance" will be held on
Saturday, Nov. 2 in the St.
Columban Church Hall.

Thousands call
for free flags
A dozen students now han-
dle between 3,000 to 5,000
calls 'a day for the free
Canadian flags originally
promoted by Heritage
Minister Sheila Copps for
Flag Day next February.
The Canadian Heritage
Department, with an operat-
ing budget of $56.3 -million,
says the free flags might end
up costing it $23 -million,
money that hasn't been bud-
geted for.
