Skater enjoys free lesson from Eisler
BY GREGOR'CAMPBELL last Tuesday's lesson was the
Expositor Staff first time he had been on
• skates in six weeks.
An area skater was on
"Cloud 9" last Tuesday
evening at the Seaforth arena.
.Eighteen -year-old Melissa
Timmermans. of RR 2 Staffa
got a free lesson from one -of
the best in the business -
Seaforth's Lloyd Eisler, a.for-
mcr World pairs champion
and two-time Olympic
bronze medalist.
She got the one-hour lesson
with Lloyd as_ a birthday pre-
sent last 'spring. Her parents,.
John and Ruth. bought it at
this year's second -annual
auction organized by Huron
Centennial School's Parent
Council. It raised about
$1.5.1(X) for assorted projects.
such as books and a new hall
diamond for the J3rucefield
public school:
Melissa- was so pumped up
she Lound it difficult to.sleep
the. night before last week's
hig Icsson, and Lloyd did not
disappoint. She says she
learned all kinds of little hut
important stuff. Timmcnnans
is no newcomer to the sport.
She has been into the figure
skating whirl for_thc_last
decade. since she was eight -
years -old, and is 'now regular-
ly coachcrj by Kathy Mcrncr
of the Exeter Figure Skating
Club.
Timmermans is entering her
OAC year at Mitchell District
High School. She is now
looking for a partner for pairs
or ice dancing in her future.
FIVE MORE YEARS
As for Eisler, a professional
skater for the past two years.
Normally he takes eight
weeks away from the grind in
the summer, but this year two
fewer. He says he has-been
on holidays at a cottage near
Huntsville, relaxing and stay4
ing in shape with a little golf
and nothing much more - a
bit of this and that.
Eisler, now 33, says hev
hopes to skate professionally
for another five years, then
pack it in. He doesn't have a
clue what he will then do
next, perhaps get into the
marketing end of figure. skat-
ing or sports in -general.
He says it may prove inter-
esting not having anything
specific to do when retire-
ment rolls around.

He enjoys teaching and giv-
ing the odd lesson here and
there, but adds coaching full-
time would•require a "110
per cent focus," which isn't
how he sees his future
unfolding right now.
Just because you're a good
skater doesn't mean you'll
make a good coach, Eisler
says.
NO CHANGE
Eisler's partner, Isabelle
Brasseur of Quebec, got mar-
ried this summer and was
still on her honeymoon when
he passed through Seaforth
last week. Both have lived
and trained in Montreal for
many years but Brasseur is
now moving to the United
States with her husband,
which will require Lloyd and
Isabelle to become more
organized as a pair.
"There will be no change in.
our relationship or our skat-
ing," Lloyd says.
. The biggest adjustment
since turning pro two years

with the constant travelling.
