Masons are oldest fraternity
•
BY
BRUCE WHITMORE
The question most often
asked by non -masons is,
"What is a Mason?" Masons
are members of the oldest
fraternity in the world. It is a
fraternity of men over the age
of 21 who profess to believe
• in a "Supreme Being."
Members are as' diverse as
the man next door, to more
notable names in the persons
of John Diefenhaker, Red
Kelly, Mozart, Robbie Burns,
and 17 U.S. Presidents. Each
of them would consider
themselves brother to one
another.
Masonry,evolved from the
guilds.of stonemasons who
built the cathedrals of the
Middle Ages. The term
"lodge" comes from the lean-
to structure which was built
beside the cathedral to house
the workmen during the con-
struction period. As the
stonemason trade faded in
importance, the men handed
together to maintain their
bond of friendship, and thus
the tools and terminology of
the trade became the vehicles
to convey values and moral
sin an allegorical format.
Thus, as in any theatrical pro-
duction, the great lessons of
life - integrity, charity, and
love for family and commu-
nity are conveyed for the
conferring of degrees.
The well-known symbols of
Masonry, the square and
compasses, are as visible as
the familiar "Golden
Arches." The square and
compasses symbol graces
lodge buildings, signs at the
entrance to towns and cities
across the land, medallions
on cars, and many a man
wears a ring or lapel pin
proudly proclaiming his
Membership. Some lodges
have a public divine service,
an open house, and "Bring -a -
Friend Night", as well as an
informative video for public
use. In recent months, the
Grand Lodge has even added
a web site to the Internet,
which can he accessed by
anyone who has a computer
and a telephone line. As such,
Masonry is the worst kept
secret in town!
A mason is a good man
who wants to join a fraternity
of men so as to become a bet-
ter man, by improving his
communication skills, his
leadership skills, and who
wants to give of himself, to
the fraternity and to the com-
munity, so that he might
experience personal growth.
Over the years masons,
through donations, bequests,
'and fundraising, have worked
