Hon. W. L. Mackenzie King pops into Queen's Hotel in Seaforth
FROM THE PAGES OF
THE HURON EXPOSITOR
SEPTEMBER 4, 1896
LOCAL BRIEFS - This
season is prolific of large
fruit yields, but perhaps the
greatest curiosity in this
direction that we have seen,
is a specimen given us by Mr.
James Fanson, of Seaforth.
This was a small limb taken
from a pear tree in his gar-
den.On a space of about four-
teen inches in length, there
are no fewer than seventeen
large sized pears. They are
growing as closely as they
can stick. The pears on this
Iimh weigh 14 and a half
pounds. Their size can be
judged from this.
- Mr. Thomas Ward, of
Varna, was in town on
Tuesday, and he was hop -
piing along with a crutch in
'one hand and a cane in the
other, and it wasn't the gout
either, but a sprained ankle.
- Mr. Charlie •Stewart
Stewart, son of Mr. James
Stewart, left on Thursday for
Brooklyn. Should Charlie
decide to remain in' the
States, he will be greatly
missed in the athletic circles
here.
- Messrs. Broadfoot, Box &
Co., of this town, have sold
and delivered to Mr:John F.
Bale, of the 2nd concession _
of Hullett, a very handsome
suite of parlor and bedroom
furniture for the fine new
brick house which he has just
completed, and the comforts
of which we hope himself
and his worthy partner may
long enjoy.
- Mr. Beck, our market gar-
dener, seems to be the Cham-
. pion cabbage grower of these
parts. Hc has shown us a
monster cabbage which
weighs 17 and a half pounds,
and measures 3 feet 8 inches
one way by 3 feet the other.
Mr. Beck also has tomatoes
which measure 16 and a half
inches.

MACKENZIE KING AT
SEA -FORTH - Hon. W.L.
Mackenzie King and his able
colleague, Hon. Dr. Henri
Beland, MP, for Beauce,
Quebec, attended and spoke
at the greatest Liberal rally
Huron County has ever seen,
at Seaforth on Wednesday of
• this week. The distinguished
visitors arrived on the late
train on Tuesday evening and
were met at thc station by a
large gathering including the
executive of the Seaforth
Liberal Association, who
took them to the Queen's
Hotel. Later they accepted
the invitation of the War
Veterans to attend the club
dance being held that
evening, where they spent a
couple of hours with mutual
please to themselves and the
Targe attendance of dancers
present. '
The rally was representative
of the whole county and great
preparation had been made
for the day. Main street was
decorated with cross stream-
ers and flags from the station
to Goderich street, as was
also the street leading to
Victoria Park, where a special
stand was erected for the
speakers and elaborate and
very pretty decorations car-
ried out.
At half past one on
Wednesday a parade headed
by the Seaforth Citizen's
Band. which gave an excel-
lent programme between the
speeches during the after-
noon, proceeded to Victoria
Park, where a crowd estimat-
ed at over 4,000 people were
in waiting. The gathering was
the largest political one ever
assembled in Seaforth or
Ag office
to remain
fa)r now
Mayor Irwin Johnston
reported to Seaforth Council
on Aug. 13 that Huron-
Brucc MPP Paul Steckle
recently assured him the sta-
tus of the government's agri-
culture office in Seaforth
won't change until at least
after thc next federal election,
if then.
Thcrc has hccn some talk
the local office might close,
as well as an office in
Stratford, and Mitchell has
hccn lobbying for it, Mayor
Johnston commented.
In the Years Agone
Huron County, and although
the weather was uncomfort-
ably warm and the speaking
occupied some three hours'
time, the order was perfect.
In fact it was a matter of
note that no speakers in any
hall or auditorium in the
Province were ever accorded
a better, more patient or inter-
ested hearing than that given
by the immense crowd who
stood throughout the after-
noon, gave to the speakers on
Wednesday.

WALTON NEWS - Russel
Marks, Walton, has started
building his new garage on
the lot adjacent to the hotel,
and workmen are busy pour-
ing cement for the walls. The
building will serve as a com-
bined garage and machine
shop. -
Rae Houston was severely
shaken up and suffered minor
injuries when he fell through
a hole in the harn floor
Sunday morning. Hc is now
convalescing at his home on
the 16th concession of Grey
Township.
Carpenters were working at
the school last week. Old
doers have hcen replaced and
many of the windows
repaired.
Keith Lawless, who has
been holidaying at Wilbur
Turnbull's home.during the
summer, returned to London
for the opening of school.
Rev. and Mrs..Hazlewood
returned home on Friday --
from Port Carling, where
they spent thc month of
August at their newly built
summer cottage.
Mr. Thomas Ross, a native
of Hamilton, and working
near Toronto, left that city
Friday afternoon for Owen
Sound. At Kitchener he met
up with two men in a bever-
age room, and from then on
he does not remember any-
thing until he came to and
found himself on the sideroad
at Jack Faber's, near Hensall,
minus his clothes and his
wallet containing $2(X), and a
very sore head. He walked in
his underwear to the farm
home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Faber, one mile south of
Hensall on Highway No. 4,
who kept him overnight, and
were very kind to him.
Provincial police are investi-
gating. he -is a man about 40.
SEPTEMBER 9, 1971
Seaforth police apprehend-
ed two men following a
break-in at Keating's
Pharmacy in Seaforth early
Wednesday.
The men were picked up in
town Wednesday after the
break-in was discovered by
Mrs. Merle Hoover when she
opened the store for business
Wednesday morning.
She realized something was
wrong almost immediately
on entering the store when
she noticed the top ripped off
a box which had contained
syringes. In addition to over
$100 in cash which was
missing, a quantity of drugs,
syringes and needles was also
missing.
Although she had no oppor-
tunity to complete an inven-
tory before press time, Mrs.
Hoover said that barbiturates
and amphetamines (speed)
were among the drugs taken.
