ALL SMILES IN "SUMMER SHOWCASE"- NHL veteran Dave McLlwain of Seaforth had reason to smile last
Wednesday night. He scored six points to help his own side defeat some talented challengers in an exhibition hockey
game at the arena. That's last season's top rookie in the IHL, Bill Bowler of the Las Vegas Thunder, smiling right back. He
scored five points on the night.
Plenty of points pile up in first skirmish of season
Familiar local hockey
names Mike Watt and Dave
McLlwain each scored six
points to lead Dave's hockey
school to an entertaining 14-9
victory over their exhibition
opponents in last Wednesday
night's annual "Summer
Showcase" at the arena.
Bill Bowler led the chal-
lengers with five points from
a pair of goals to go with
three assists. He is from
Mississauga and was named
the top rookie in the
International Hockey League
last season, playing for the
Las Vegas Thunder. Greg
Murray, of the Dublin area
and most recently of the
Jacksonville Bullets, added a
goal and pair of assists for
the losers. Brothers Mike and
Jeff Martin, both with
Windsor's junior Spitfires,
each added two goals. The
others were scored by Chris
Taylor of the National
Hockey League's New York
Islanders and Jeff Zchr of the
junior A Spitfires.
NHL veteran Dave, also
now with the Islanders, led
his squad to the win with a
hat trick and three assists.
Watt, who won a world
championship gold medal
with Canada's national junior
team earlier this year, had
four assists and a pair of
goals. Both Dan Wildfong
(Colgate) and Dave's ageless
dad Jack scored two times._

Intra -squad
new wrinkle
The Seaforth Centenaires
begin the Labour Day week-
end and their pre -season
exhibition hockey schedule
with a Green and White game
at the arena Friday night at 8
p.m.
The Cents also have home -
and -home exhibitions with
the Thamesford's Trojans, the
first weekend of next month,
then Mitchell's Hawks later
ter in September on their pre-
season dance card.
In recent years the Cents
have opened their exhibition
schedule with a rookie game
against the Brussels Bulls,
but the coaching staff decid-
ed to go with an. intra -squad
this year, with OHA referees,
to get a better handle on this
year's prospects before some
head off to school. Last sea-
son's division finalists
opened camp last Tuesday
and have had four practices
in the past week.
Returning co-head coach
Dave Murray says Friday's
"Green and White" will give
local hockey fans a sncak
preview of the Cents this
year, plus an opportunity to
watch other local players
who arc attempting to move
on.
Our nucleus is local talent,
with other up-and-comers
from the area, he says. The
game will give us "a Netter
feel" on some rookies
The Centenaires open their

Junior "D"evelopment
League Reason on home ice
against the Tavistock Braves
on Sept. 27.
