Health unit does not try to "entrap"
Dear Editor:
1 am writing to clarify
information published on
Aug. 21, 1996 in.an article
entitled "Stores charged for
selling smokes". Due to the
editing of our news release,
the story implied that local
stores were charged with sell-
ing tobacco to minors as a .
result of a compliance check
conducted by the H
County Health Unit in
November.1995. A compli-
ance check is a survey con-
ducted to measure the.will-
ingness of a tobacco retailer
to sell tobacco to minors. The
15 and 16 year olds involved
did. not actually purchase the
cigarettes.even if the clerk
was willing to sell.

Letters to the Editor
Planning future policies
Dear Editor: •
Consider this scenario, you
are a retiring farmer yet you
want to stay on thc farm and
help your children get a good
start in the business. Should
you attempt to sever a retire-
ment lot off the farm?
Provincial statistics show that
• retirement lots change owner-
ship within an average of
three years after the consent
to sever is granted. What type
of conflicts might your chil-
dren face with future proper-
ty owners and their farming
practices after you move on'?
What is the possibility that
your children will be able to
carry on with the business
yew have worked a life time
to build and maybe your par-
ents before you?
• These thoughts are futuris-
tic but this is the type of
thinking that is needed to
chart the future for the next
twenty years. Twenty years is
how long the previous Huron
County Plan survived.
Retirement severances is just
one of the many issues that
affect land use, planning and
the way we farm in Huron
County. Planning is a mys-
tery to some folks while oth-
ers perceive it as a obstacle to
their individutl1 wishes. The
County Plan sets the overall
goals and philosophy pf,plan-
ning for thc County.'Each

overall goals of the County
Plan. Community participa-

future of Huron County and
more specifically the policies
that affect agriculture is
available to you with a series
of three workshops. You may
attend one or more of these

will evolve from one to the

selling cigarettesto minors,
as the article appeared to sug-
gest. Between Jely 1995 and
August 1996, seven retailers
have been charged under the
Tobacco Control Act for sell-
ing cigarettes to minors.
These charges have been the
result of an inspector wit-
nessing the infractions and
are not related'to the compli-
ance check.
