I had an excellent time and I thank you all for the beautiful gifts.. Thanks also to Peg and the girls for organizing the whole evening. It was great! - Tammy. 47-34x1c This is the third year volun- teer members of the Huron Hospice have been selling colchicum bulbs (also known as autumn crocus, meadow saffron - not to be confused with the spice - and wonder bulb) to raise money for their organization. The local service provides many hours of home and hos- pital care each year. "Volunteers contribute to an atmosphere of compassion, emotional support, and respect for members of our community who are facing a life threatening illness, and often provide an essential source of relief for primary caregivers," states the group's brochure. "We are developing support services for individuals recently diag- nosed with a life threatening illness. We also believe strongly in the value of sup- port for the bereaved." 47. Bulb has symbolism Seaforth psychologist Dr. Robert Shepherd, chair of the hospice, came up with the idea to sell the bulbs to gen- erate money. "I was struck by the symbolism of it," he said. "The growth cycle of the flower is meaningful in rela- tion to hospice, in that some- thing of 'bare and simple beauty' arises in a time tradi- tionally associated with decline, decay, or rest," wrote Shepherd in his letter to CHAO. The bulbs are usually plant- ed in July and August and flower in mid to late September. Bulbs can also be planted indoors in pebble pots. "Like all perennials, they follow a continuous cycle of growth and decline, birth and death. The flower is in itself striking and beautiful, yet simple and fragile." The flower is hardy and the bulbs are toxic which will keep squirrels and other pests from eating them. "It's something that every- body can grow," said Shepherd. The main attraction of this plant is its striking and quick succession of blooms which come in white and predomi- nant a rosy purple colour. The bulbs are grown by John Gaunt of Belgrave. The target for the hospice this year is to sell from 1,000 to 2,000 bulbs. Last year 1,200 were sold. Some bulbs will be for sale every Saturday in August at the Goderich Farmers' Market. They are available at a price of three dollars each, five for $10 and at other discount prices up to quantities of 100. There isn't a door-to-door ampaign for the colchicum bulbs because volunteers in. Goderich, Clinton and Seaforth only total 24 (about eight in each community). "The selling has been more word of mouth from volun- teers," says the hospice chair. However, there are several ways to get hold of the bulbs. The Huron Hospice now has offices in Seaforth, Clinton and Goderichat each of the local hospitals. The Seaforth and Clinton office numbers are: (519) 527-0655 and (519) 482-3811. The Goderich office line is just being installed but Goderich residents can call hospice hoard member Sandi Davidson at (519) 524-5346. "This is a tremendous accomplishment. Fall volunteer session The Huron Hospice will be holding its annual fall course for helping those facing ill- ness or bereavement at the .Alexandra General and Marine Hospital beginning Tuesday, September 10. "We had upwards of 40 people come out the last two years. And they stuck through the whole thing," says Shepherd. The course has been 10 weeks in length but this year will be cut back to eight. Not everyone who takes the course ends up becoming a member of the Huron Hospice Volunteer Service. Many take the course to help friends and family. Death and dying isa topic that makes many feel uncom- fortable. - "People are fearful," says Shepherd. But it's easier than most people think to help out. "The last thing on the mind of someone dying is whether you're saying the right thing," says the psychologist. Sometimes just being with a person before they die and holding their hand is enough. There are certain rules for hospice volunteers like not to give advice or be a therapist to the person who is termi- nally ill. But to be there as support at this important pas- sage of life Local golfers play Mitchell Cam Doig of Seaforth shot a 74 and tied for fourth in the first flight, for those with a handicap of from 0 to 6, at the Mitchell Golf and Country Club's annual men's invitation on July 31.
