the local library this
summer. They read stories, played games and did crafts.
Fitness costs more than we bargained
The local recreation direc-
tor said the Huron health unit
planned and co-ordinated all
activities in this year's
Summer Active, with a bud-
get for the project of $4,140.
Of this total, advertising cost
$1,940, promotional materi-
als were budgeted for $1,000
and the co-ordinator's hono-
rarium at $1,200.
Some parking prohibited
Scaforth took an unexpect-
ed $350 hit for participating
in' Summer Active earlier this
summer.
it ended up costing thc
Huron County Health Unit
even more. It got nicked for
$2,2(X).
At Town Hall last Tuesday,
recreation director Marty
Bedard told Scaforth
Council he was "shocked"
that organizers of the county-
wide program to promote
active living through partici-
pation in leisure activities,
were notified six weeks after
the program (May I I to June
7) ended, on July 29, that the
health ministry froze grants.
This.despitc the fact thc
District Health Council
"approved the grant and gave
us the go ahead," Bedard
said.
WALKABOUT - The Goderich detachment of the OPP was
getting acquainted with merchants and citizens on
Seaforth's Main Street last week. From left: Staff Sgt. Brian
Baldwin, Mayor Irwin Johnston, Tracey De Jong, Sgt.
Frank Young.
Main. Street left messy
Seaforth's "Public Works
Department expressed some
concerns regarding the
garbage that was left on Main
Street and not cleaned up by
merchants" after the "very
successful" annual Moonlight
Madness promotion. July 26.
The report by deputy -clerk
economic development co-
ordinator Cathy Garrick to
Scaforth Council last
Tuesday night states "there
were also some complaints
regarding the condition of
Gouinlock Street following
the dance.
"The Commercial Hotel
will be advised that these
problems will have to he
addressed if thc dance is to
he permitted in the future."
All towns in the county
except Clinton took part.
"The health, unit is picking
up the promotion materials
And the co-ordinators
expense and the advertising
will he split six ways,"
Bedard told council last
week. "Our share of this
expense is $350." .
Council decided to pay
$172 for a prohibited parking
sign for the municipal lot on
John Street last week.
The lowest of two tenders,
from Jim Floyd of The Rec
Shop, was accepted.
A bylaw recently passed
prohibiting hig trucks and
cabs, motorhbmcs, unli-
censed vehicles and parking
tor more than 24 continuous
hours in the lot.
Council says the lot near
downtown is for thc conve-
nience of shoppers, mer-
chants and employees.
"We didn't put a parking lot
there to have commercial
vehicles park there," com-
mented deputy -reeve Bill
Teal!.
Disbandment payment approved
Council passed a motion
last Tuesday to approve "a
full and final payment" of
$14,110.36, considerably Jess
than invoiced, for Seaforth's
share of the cost for disband-
ing Huron County's police
communications system.
The figure was recommend-
ed by Seaforth's Police
Services Board and Goderich
gets the cheque.
The payment was less than
Goderich wished because
Scaforth has not been a mem-
ber of the system since
October last year when fur-
ther costs, for instance legal
fees for the disbandment
hearing, that the local PSB
FACELIFT - The
Cardno block on
Seaforth's Main Street
is covered with scaffold-
ing these days, getting a
bit of a facelift.
