It's Canada's Largest Outdoor Motocross National - called the Grand National Championships. 10 miles north of Seaforth off Huron County Road 12, just cast of Walton. It runs from Aug. 15 to 18. Among other motorcycle races, thc Sunday is the fourth event in Canada's five - stop professional motocross circuit. The first hockey game of the season is in Seaforth a wcck tonight! The annual Summer Showcase Gamc is on Wednesday evening, Aug. 21 at the arena, where ice is returning this wcck, with the instructors at Dave McLlwain's Hockey School taking on a lineup of assorted talent. The games have hecn "goalie's nightmares" the past two years but highly entertaining. Rosters aren't sct yet, with things just starting to come together, but the local hockey school said the following players were "sure shows" in its lineup next Wednesday: Dave McLlwain. New York Islanders; Mike Watt, World Champion Canadian National Junior Team and MSU Spartans; Scott Muscutt, University of Ncw Brunswick; Scott Harmer. Roanoke Express, ECHL; Greg Van Bakel, St. Marys Lincolns; Jeff MacLean, Kitchener Dutchmen; Craig Minard, Orangeville Junior B; Jason Beuttenmillcr, He's Beenaround; Mike Devereaux, member. of Stratford Cullitons' Sutherland Cup winning team of 1994-95; Daryl rivers, Ottawa 67's; and, Jay Heinbuck, assistant coach, St. Lawrence University. "Confirmed maybes" for the game are Chris and Andrew Taylor, Detroit Whalers and Jeff Paul of the Niagara Falls Thunder. "Maybe, maybes" are Tim Taylor of the Detroit Red Wings, and Mikc and Jeff Martin of the Windsor Spitfires. Goalies arc Matt Barnes, Western Michigan University; Elliott Faust, North Bay Centennials and Kcn Carroll, University of New Brunswick. Seaforth District High School basketball star Ron Vercruyzen.of Walton has switched teams and joined defending Belgian First 'Division champion Charleroi. He has played for Aalst in the Belgian First Division for the past. four years but thc champs, almost a national team, bought out the final year of his contract. Vercruyzen turned down a more lucrative offer from an Italian club to join Charlcoi, a club that tours all over Europe and is currently play- ing in Greece. Vcrcruyzcn, 28, returned to Europe Tate last month and is now on tour with his new team in Greece. Thcy wanted him for five years but he signed for two. Doig at Open Ian Doig of Seaforth had a four -round score of 291 last week at the Ontario Open at the St. Thomas golf club. He was 17 strokes behind Martin Price of Collingwood who beat Ashley Chinncr of Scarborough with a 40 -foot putt in a playoff. The two had finished the four rounds tied at 274. Doig fired rounds of 67, 75, 72 and 77 and won $313. Rockets roll Three Rockets scored three goals each Thursday night as they blew • away the Hurricanes 10-4 to win thc Seaforth Man's Roller Hockey championship. . The Rockets also ran away with the league during the regular summer schedule. They advanced to thc final by beating Young Blood 10-7 last Wednesday.
