BRANDON LAMMERANT
March 22, 1986 - August 9, 1991
Too soon au end to the life of a
Cherished son, loving brother
and grandson as a result of a
tragic car accident, 5 years ago.
A thousand tunes we needed you,
A thousand times we"cried,
If our love could have saved you,
You would never have died.
When we are sad and lonely,
And everything goes wrong,
We seem to hear you whisper
"Cheer up and carry on."
Each time we look at your picture,
You seem to smile and say,
"Don't cry, I'm only resting
We'll meet again some day'
Your place on earth no one can fill,
We'll -love you now and always will.
The joys we shared together,.
And the memories we hold so dear,
The -happiness you gave us,
Keeps you forever near.
Saddly Missed by Daddy and
big brother Christopher.

THE HURON EXPOSITOR, AuWust 7, 1996-11
Wonder how come? Why? And wherefore?
In the Middle East they can
rig a phone so that a signal
from an airplane detonates
the device and beheads the
so-called "Engineer", the
mastermind behind some of
the bloodiest attacks in
Israel's history.
In Wainfleet, today is the
sixth day in a row. I'm having
to use my neighbour's phone
to beg Bell Telephone to
come out and get mine
operating again. They can't
give you a time and the .
repairman hasn't yet showed
up on the day he was
supposed to, so what does
Bell Repair do? They leave
messages of apology on my
Bell Answering Service
which I don't get because --
here's the thing -- MY
PHONE'S NOT
WORKING! ! ! -
I'd like to be able to
message back "All my lines
are dead right now, but your
call is important to me."
Personally, I think Bell
Canada has spread itself too
thin and should concentrate
on the one thing it does well
and consistently well -- rate
hikes.
How come, I ask myself.
How come?
And why, when you to to
pay your bills, do all these -
multi -national corporations
send you a tiny little
envelope that's one inch
shorter than the cheque
you're suppose to put in it?
Huh? Why don't they take all
that paper they're wasting on
those annoying change -of -
address flaps and make their
envelopes bigger?
But I suppose that if in the
last twenty-five years, we
haven't been able to convince
food distributors to solve the
12 -hot -do s -in- k d 8
buns -in -a -bag mystery,
there's not much hope of
matching cheques to
envelopes any time now.
And when you try to
endorse a cheque at the bank
counter, who's behind the
plot to prevent this from
happening? Are the banks
ordering special pens that
won't work on cheques or is
the paper industry treating the
back of cheques with a
signature resistant coating?
The halting, half -inked
signature on the back of most
of my cheques looks more
like a bank robber's note.
And could those public
toilet dispensers be made
even tighter to turn or the -
paper made even weaker so
you'd never be able to get
even one square outta those
damn things?
Don't give us new space-
age, state-of-the-art claptrap.
Give us stuff that works!
And how come it now costs
two cents to produce a
penny? This is not a penny
saved. This is bad math.
Did you know that there are
people who are allowed to
drive cars and vote living in a
place called Punkydoodles
Corners, Ontario.
Custom Officer: "And
where's home? Punkydoodles
Comers? Pull over, open your
trunk, empty your purse and .
don't make any sudden
moves."
And how come Canada
sends observers to oversee
elections in newly democratic
countries, but nobody's
investigating all the voting
irregularities that went on
during the last Quebec
Referendum?
And how come prostitution
is illegal in this country, but
Revenue Canada expects
prostitutes to keep financial
records and pay taxes on their
earnings. (Couldn't they track
this revenue by monitoring
the spending records of the
guys at Revenue Canada?)
How the hell does my fax -
machine know the exact date
and time of every day when
me and my watch don't."
Why do they put those
annoying little stickers on
every piece of fruit you buy
today? Let's draw the line at
bananas before they target
raisins next.
And how come a handful of
popcorn kernels that costs
less than ten cents at the
corner store is suddenly
worth $4.50 at the cinema
after they pop it and splash
on some yellow liquid that
tastes more like STP than
butter? Answer that for me,
will you?
And wouldn't it be great to
ha e a little remote control in
your car so that when those
discourteous drivers neglect
to use their turn signals,
leaving you sitting and
guessing, you could just hit
the po'ver button and explode
their air bags?
And why is somebody
picking their nose the most
disgusting thing you've ever
seen, unless you're the one
doing it."
Seven Wonders of the
World" Huh! There's gotta be
at least 407 and kids ask
everyone.
Why do all these questions
nag me half to death and why
are they without answers? It's
a conspiracy to drive me
crazy, that's why.
Oh yeah, they're out there
plotting my mental demise.
Why just last week they tried
to poison me with the toxin
strawberries. So I shut myself
off from the outside world
and the next day they said the
lead in my blinds was going
to kill me anyway. .
I know I'm paranoid, but I
also believe they really are
out to get me.
Do you know what to do if a twister touches down?
The recent movie Twister
has captured the attention of
Canadians and serves as a
good reminder of the incredi-
ble devastation they can
cause. Would you know what
to do to protect yourself and
your family in case a tornado
strikes your community?
Here are some "tornado tips"
from- • Emergency
Preparedness Canada and
Environment Canada. .
WHAT TO DO
Before: .
* Have an emergency kit on
hand. Include items such as a
flashlight, battery-operated
radio, extra batteries, food
and water, clothing, blankets,
first aid kit and tools for
emergency repair jobs.
* Be prepared! Designate a
shelter area in your home.

*Make sur and every-
body in your hou ,ehold know
the difference between a
"severe weather watch" and
a "severe weather warning."
-A "watch" means there is a
potential for severe weather;
he on the lookout. A "warn-
ing" means severe weather.is
occurring; take precautions.
* Have a plan tor members
of your household to stay in.
touch. Severe weather often
strikes during the day,when
families are at work or
school. Pick a friend or rela-
tive to serve as the "family
contact."
During:
* Watch the weather. and
monitor the television and
radio stations that broadcast
severe weather bulletins.
.At home, go directly to the
basement. Takc.cover under a
sturdy workbench, desk or
table to protect yourself from
flying debris. Use your arms
to protect your head.
If yc .t don't have a base-
ment, tike shelter in a small
inner room or hallway.
Bathrooms and closets are
also good places: Again. pro-
tect your head. Stay clear of
windows, -doors -and outside
walls. -
In an apartment or office
tower, go to an inner hallway
or room, preferably on the
lower floors or in the base-
ment. (the same rule applies
to schools). Remember stay
away .from windows and
- don't use the elevators.
* Don't get caught in a car
or mobile home. More than
50% of all tornado deaths.
occur in mobile homes. Take
shelter elsewhere such as a
building with 'a strong foun-
dation. If no shelter is avail-
able, crouch down in a ditch
away from the -vehicle or
mobile home. protect your'

ACCIDENT FREE - East Huron Poultry in Dublin has now achieved four years of accident
free work time, more than 500,000 man hours without a lost -time accident. Employees
anti mana9ement say they're taking dead aim at. one million. The accomplishment is
impressive given that employees work with razor sharp knives and do repetitive work.

Three -hull
design intrigues
Royal Navy
The Royal Navy is con-
sidering a radical three -hull
design that would reduce
seasickness, among other ad-
vantages, on the next
generation of British %%ear ships.
The trimaran designis faster
than conventional ships and
otters better protection from
enemy radar and torpedoes. It
also requires less powerful
engines because of lower water
14 resistance, so could reduce fuel
ti and ti,'r\ la' hills.

head with your hands.
* Avoid buildings with
wide frecspan roofs such as
gymnasiums, churches and
auditoriums. They're more
likely to collapse if struck by
a tornado. if you're caught in
one of these buildings, seek
shelter under a sturdy struc-
ture like a table. Don't take
refuge in a parked car.
If you are driving and spot
a tornado, get out of the car
and take cover in a low-lying
area. Never try to drive to
safety, as you can't outrun a
tornado they're much too fast
and they rarely move in a
straight line. They weave
back and forth and change
direction suddenly.
Watch for flying debris.
Even small objects such as
sticks and .straw can become
lethal missiles when driven
by a tornado's winds. If time
permits, store garden furni-
ture and.garbage cans in the
basement.
Telltale Signs: • -
Tornadoes' precursors are
warm humid weather and
thunderstorms that develop
when -the cool northern air
masses collide with hot air
flowing north from the Gulf
of Mexico. Throw in a com-
plicated pattern of updrafts
and downdrafts in the atmos-
phere and part of the base of
the thunder cloud starts 'to
rotate. A tornado is born.
Watch out for these tornado
warning signs:
Severe thunderstorms with
frequent thunder and light-
ning.
Sky becomes extremely
dark; sometimes with green
or yellow clouds.
A rumbling sound like a
freight train or a whistling
sound like a jet plane.
A funnel cloud at the rear
base of the thunder cloud,
often behind a curtain of
heavy rain or hail.
A calm before the storm.
Winds may die down and the
air may become very still.
Did you know that...
Did you know?
May to Septe•mbcr are
prime tornado months, with
the peak season 911 June and
early July. The afternoon and
early evening arc the peak
times for tornadoes.
In Canada, during an aver-
age year, 80 tornadoes cause
two deaths and 20 injuries
plus tens of millions of dol-
lars in property damage.
These are the reported num-
hers. Nobody knows for sure
how many more tornadoes
strike unpopulated areas,
undetected, with no reports of
damage.
Canada's "tornado alleys"
arc southern Ontario, Alberta,
southwestern Quebec and 'a
band stretching from south-
ern Saskatchewan and
Manitoba through to Thunder
Bay. The interior of British
Columbia and western New
Brunswick are also tornado
zones.
